2GIL29 GALLERY is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Charlie Hahn (B.1973), <Vice Versa> from June 27 to July 20, 2019. Charlie Hahn is the second-generation Korean-American media artist who has been active both in the U.S. and Korea, and he has mostly tackled issues relevant to identity, spatiality, culture, and etc. with a variety of genre of art including photography, media art, installation art and etc. In this show at 2GIL29 GALLERY, he will present media art works reflecting a reality through allegorical variation of reality and virtuality in the simulation era.
As Jean Baudrillard’s concerned, a transition to the world of simulation which has no original, as it makes reality disappear and displaces substitute where the reality use to be, obscures demarcation between reality and virtuality, and essence and phenomenon. As mentioned above, in the digital age, accelerated simulacre’s world has grown in stature as a paradigm of the era, and it signifies a parting from the traditional way of life and values and at the same time loss of authority and dissolution of system. And drastic collapse and severance from existing value give rises to absence of real value which conversely brings about existence of insubstantial ideology through illusionary image.
He takes note of that dominance of virtuality that holds sway over the reality and its extension even stretches away to control the reality, and furthermore, he points out the fallacy that virtual things confine real things. He sets up an allegorical device as a metaphor of reality in the ordinary moment of daily life and adds a digital touch on an actual space through virtual line, plane, and figure ( basic elements for optical illusion) making those images involve in a realm of reality. The virtual elements that he offers create a moment of reflection on the real world where simulation rules over.
The recent video work that will be on view in this exhibition will show daily ‘movement’(wind) drawn from flow of time and coexisting ‘standstill (shadow)’, and it reveals virtuality’s dominant governance on reality and at the same time, the moment of truth at demarcation which virtuality manifests the reality vice versa. Through this exhibition, You could get an opportunity to have marvelous time of reflection to reach to the truth of reality by rejecting conventionality and inertia from hectic and exhausting life pattern.
Bio.
Charlie Hahn( B.1973) completed his B.F.A (Photography) and M.F.A (Digital Arts) at Maryland Institute College of Art, and M.F.A (Studio Arts) at Towson University in the U.S. He has been a researcher at the Yonsei Media Arts Research Institute from 2005 to 2008. Also, He participated in a research project called “Gwangju, Center City of Culture” and government governed culture projects. He earned his M.A., in Digital Arts, B.F.A, in Photography from Maryland Institute College of Art and M.F.A., in Studio Arts at Towson University. He was a professor at the Maryland Institute College of Art, currently; he is a professor at Video Animation at Artech College in Keimyung University.

이길이구 갤러리는 2019년 6월 27일부터 7월 20일까지 찰리한 (B.1973) <Vice Versa> 초대전을 마련한다. 작가 찰리 한은 이민 1.5세대 작가로 미국 메릴랜드 아트 인스티튜트에서 사진과 디지털 예술, 토슨 대학교 대학원에서 시각 예술로 석사 학위를 받았다. 2005년부터 2008년까지 연세대학교 미디어아트 연구소의 연구원 및 메릴랜드 아트 인스티튜트의 교수를 거쳐 2010년부터 현재까지 계명대학교 아르텍 칼리지의 영상애니메이션과 교수로 재직중이다. 한국과 미국을 오가며 왕성하게 작품 활동 펼치고 있는 작가는 사진, 영상, 설치 작업 등을 통해 정체성, 공간성, 문화성에 대한 이슈를 다뤄왔다.
이번 이길이구 갤러리에서의 전시는 ‘Vice Versa’ 란 제목으로 시뮬라시옹 시대의 실재와 가상에 대한 알레고리적 변주를 보여주는 작업을 선보인다. 현대인들은 사물의 유일성을 보여주는 원본의 정신을 가진 개체들이 아닌 대량생산을 통해 수없이 복제되고 반복되어지는 시뮬라크르(simulacre)속에서 살아가고 있다. 산업혁명 이후 대량생산 체제와 미디어의 발달 등은 많은 이미지들을 복제하고 소비중심의 사회로 이끌었고 그것은 현실의 삶에서 실재(實在)와 가상, 본질과 현상의 경계를 모호하게 만들어 왔다. SNS의 발달과 이미지의 홍수의 현대사회속에서의 시뮬라크르는 이미 우리 삶을 지배하고 있으며 가상은 이미 실재보다 더욱 강력한 실재성을 가지게 되었다. 이른바 시뮬라크르로 인해 소비하고, 투자하고, 소비하게 된 세상이 된 것이다.
장 보드리야르는 “실재(實在)를 사라지게 하고 , 사라진 실재의 자리에 자신을 데려다 놓아, 그 자체가 새로운 실재가 되는 것 ‘이라고 ‘시뮬라시옹’의 현상을 정의 내린바 있다. 그것의 진실성 여부가 아니라, 우리의 현실에서 그것이 실재하는 것처럼 기능하고 우리가 그것이 마치 현실세계인양 반응하고 있다는 것이다. 우리의 현실은 실재의 거짓 재현이 아니라 실재가 더 이상 실재가 되지 못하는 사실을 숨기는 시뮬라시옹 사회가 된 것이 아닐까 되짚어보게 된다.
찰리 한은 현실의 실제를 지배하는 가상의 역할이 현실을 제어하는 단계로 확장되는 것에 주목하며 나아가 가상의 것들이 실재를 규정 하려 하는 오류를 지적하고 있다. 그는 일상 속에 드러난 자연스러운 장면들에 현실을 은유하는 알레고리적 장치를 하고 디지털 조작을 통해 실제 공간 위에 가상의 선, 면, 도형(시각적 착시의 기본 요소들) 등의 이미지를 현실의 영역 속에 개입시킨다. 그가 제시한 허구의 요소들은 시뮬라시옹이 지배하는 현실 세계에 대한 재인식의 순간을 만들어내는 것이다. 특히 이번 전시에서 선보이는 최근작인 영상 작업은 시간의 흐름 속에서 길어낸 일상적 ‘움직임(바람)'과 공존하는 ‘부동(그림자)'의 현실을 통해, 실제에 대한 가상의 주도적 지배성과 더불어 가상성에 의해 실제가 명징해지는 경계적 진실의 순간과 맞닿아있는 모종의 시간을 멈춰 세우는 힘을 보여주고 있다.
작가 소개.
찰리한 (B.1973)은 미국 Maryland Institute College of Art 에서 사진으로 학사, 디지털 예술로 석사, Towson University 에서 시각 예술로 석사 학위를 받았다. 2005년부터 2008년까지 연세대학교 미디어아트 연구소의 연구원으로 활동했으며, ‘광주문화중심도시’ 리서치 프로젝트를 비롯한 정부주관 문화프로젝트에 참여 하였다. 또한. Maryland Institute College of Art의 교수로 재직했으며 2015년 부터 지금까지 대구 계명대학교 Artech College 영상애니메이션과 교수로 재직중이다.
