Memory, Formed | 기억의 형상
이길이구 갤러리는 오는 7월 12일부터 8월 16일까지 여름 기획전 『기억의 형상 Memory, Formed』을 개최합니다. 이번 전시는 곽훈(b. 1941), 김범(b. 1963), 김웅(b. 1944), 서도호(b. 1962) 등 네 명의 작가가 참여하며, 회화, 조각, 설치 등 다양한 매체를 통해 ‘기억’이라는 주제를 다층적으로 사유하고 시각화하는 동시대 미술의 흐름을 조명합니다.
전시 제목 『기억의 형상 Memory, Formed』은 기억을 더 이상 고정된 과거의 장면이나 단순한 회상으로 보지 않고, 감각과 경험, 시간과 장소, 이미지와 신체가 얽히며 지금 이 순간에도 끊임없이 형성(form)되고 있는 유동적인 구조로 이해하고자 하는 데서 출발했습니다. 이 전시는 기억이 어떻게 조형화되고, 동시대의 시각언어 속에서 어떤 방식으로 감각되고 드러나는지를 탐색합니다.
참여 작가들은 각기 다른 세대와 조형 언어를 지니고 있지만, 모두가 ‘기억’이라는 주제를 매개로 시간과 감각, 정체성과 장소에 대한 질문을 던진다는 점에서 공통된 사유의 축을 형성합니다.
곽훈(b. 1941)은 조각의 물질성과 신체적 감각을 통해 시간과 기억의 본질을 탐구해온 원로 작가입니다. 오랜 시간 축적된 기억이 공간 안에 응축되고 표면화되는 과정을 조형적으로 구현해 왔습니다. 김범(b. 1963)은 언어, 규칙, 반복이라는 개념적 장치를 통해 기억의 흐름과 단절을 실험하는 작가로, 비가시적이고 비물질적인 기억의 구조를 탐색합니다. 그의 작업은 일상과 예술, 현실과 개념 사이의 미세한 틈을 드러냅니다. 김 웅(b. 1944)은 회화의 물질성과 붓질의 시간성을 통해 내면의 감정과 기억을 응축시켜 왔습니다. 감정의 밀도와 시간의 흔적이 켜켜이 쌓인 화면은 회화가 지닌 고유한 물성과 함께 기억을 시각화하는 강력한 장치가 됩니다. 서도호(b. 1962)는 개인의 신체와 공간의 관계를 통해 집단적 기억과 정체성을 탐구하는 세계적 작가입니다. 집, 문, 다리와 같은 건축적 구조물은 그 자체로 기억의 저장소이며, 개인과 사회, 과거와 현재가 교차하는 장소로 기능합니다.
이처럼 네 작가의 작업은 서로 다른 매체와 형식을 취하고 있음에도 불구하고, 기억을 감각하고 구축해 나가는 공통된 시선을 공유합니다. 『기억의 형상』은 기억의 정치성과 서정성, 물질성과 비물질성, 개인성과 집단성이라는 여러 축을 가로지르며, 동시대 미술에서 기억을 어떻게 조형화할 수 있을지에 대한 본질적인 질문을 던지는 전시입니다.

2GIL29 GALLERY is pleased to present its summer group exhibition, Memory, Formed, on view from July 12 to August 16, 2025.
The exhibition brings together four seminal figures in Korean contemporary art—Hoon Kwak (b. 1941), Beom Kim (b. 1963), Woong Kim (b. 1944), and Do Ho Suh (b. 1962)—who each engage with the theme of memory through diverse mediums including painting, sculpture, and installation, offering multi-layered visual and conceptual inquiries. The title Memory, Formed reflects a shift away from viewing memory as static or retrospective. Instead, it frames memory as a fluid, ever-evolving structure—one shaped by sensory perception, experience, time, place, image, and the body. The exhibition explores how memory is constructed, felt, and made visible through contemporary artistic language. While the participating artists span different generations and formal vocabularies, they are united in their deep engagement with memory as a lens for examining time, identity, sensation, and space. Their works propose shared trajectories of thought despite material and conceptual differences. Hoon Kwak (b. 1941) is a pioneering sculptor who has long explored the materiality of time and memory. His sculptural forms encapsulate the way memory is condensed and inscribed into space through the physicality of form and bodily resonance. Beom Kim (b. 1963) employs language, repetition, and systems of order as conceptual tools to examine the flow and rupture of memory. His works make visible the intangible structures of memory and highlight the subtle fissures between everyday life, art, and perception. Woong Kim (b. 1944) works through the medium of painting to distill inner emotion and memory. The textured surfaces of his canvases—accumulated through layered brushwork—convey emotional density and temporal depth, serving as visual condensations of affective memory. Do Ho Suh (b. 1962) is internationally renowned for his sculptural investigations of personal and collective memory through architectural and bodily spaces. His iconic fabric structures—houses, doors, bridges—function as vessels of memory, evoking the convergence of individual experience and shared history.
Though varied in medium and method, the practices of these four artists resonate in their common pursuit to form memory—materially, sensorially, and conceptually. Memory, Formed traverses the lyrical and political, the tangible and immaterial, the personal and collective, inviting viewers to consider how memory is shaped, stored, and experienced through the lens of contemporary art.

곽훈 Hoon Kwak (b. 1941)
곽훈은 1941년생으로 서울대학교 서양화과를 졸업하고, 미국 캘리포니아 주립대와 롱비치 대학원 순수미술학과에서 수학했습니다. 1975년 미국으로 이주한 이후 회화 작업을 본격화하였으며, 강렬한 색감과 물감의 물성을 기반으로 한 대형 회화 작업으로 독자적인 예술세계를 구축해왔습니다.
그의 작업은 선사적 원형성과 현대적 추상의 언어가 충돌하는 회화적 지층 위에 기억, 시간, 정신성이라는 주제를 담고 있으며, 대표작으로는 1980년대의 《기(氣)》, 1990년대 《겁(劫)》, 최근작 《할라잇(Halaayt)》 연작 등이 있습니다. 오랜 시간 축적된 내면의 감정과 에너지를 화폭에 응축시키는 방식으로, 회화라는 매체가 기억과 감각의 저장소가 될 수 있음을 증명해왔습니다. 1995년 베네치아 비엔날레 한국관 대표 작가로 선정되었으며, 2023년에는 이중섭미술상을 수상했습니다.
김범 Beom Kim (b. 1963)
김범은 1963년생으로 서울대학교 회화과를 졸업하고, 미국 UCLA에서 미술 석사 학위를 취득했습니다. 그는 한국 개념미술의 대표 작가로, 언어와 규칙, 반복, 드로잉, 오브제 등을 통해 일상 속 사물과 경험을 철학적으로 전환하는 작업을 지속해왔습니다.
김범의 작품은 감각적 재현보다는 사유의 구조를 드러내는 방식으로 기억을 다룹니다. 반복되는 언어나 물건, 시스템은 기억이 습관과 일상, 무의식 속에서 어떻게 생성되고 작동하는지를 보여주는 장치로 기능합니다.
그의 작품은 테이트 모던, 뉴욕 현대미술관(MoMA), 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관 등 다수의 주요 기관에 소장되어 있으며, 일민미술상(2001), 광주비엔날레 대상(2004)을 수상한 바 있습니다.
김웅 Woong Kim (b. 1944)
김웅은 1944년생으로 홍익대학교 회화과를 졸업한 후 뉴욕으로 이주해 50여 년 넘게 활동해온 작가입니다. 뉴욕 아트 스튜던트 리그(Art Students League) 등에서 수학하며, 한국적 서정성과 미국 추상표현주의의 형식을 접목한 독창적인 회화 세계를 구축했습니다.
그의 작업은 반복되는 붓질, 두터운 물감의 물성, 색면의 중첩을 통해 감정과 기억의 결을 화면 위에 정제된 형식으로 드러냅니다. 시간의 흐름과 내면의 감정이 물질로 고착된 듯한 김웅의 회화는 관람자의 감각을 천천히 감싸며, 기억의 잔향을 환기합니다.
국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관, 뉴욕 한국문화원 등 국내외 기관에 작품이 소장되어 있으며, 한국과 미국을 오가며 꾸준한 작업을 이어가고 있습니다.
서도호 Do Ho Suh (b. 1962)
서도호는 1962년생으로 서울대학교 동양화과를 졸업한 후, 미국 로드아일랜드디자인학교(RISD)와 예일대학교에서 조소를 전공했습니다. 그는 개인과 집단, 공간과 정체성, 기억과 이주의 문제를 천과 건축 구조물, 영상, 드로잉 등 다양한 매체로 풀어내며 세계적인 주목을 받아왔습니다.
서도호의 대표작인 투명한 패브릭으로 만든 건축물 연작은, 유년 시절의 집과 몸의 기억을 반복적으로 재현함으로써, 장소성과 기억의 관계를 형상화합니다. 그의 작업은 개인의 정체성이 기억의 층위에서 어떻게 형성되고, 공간을 통해 어떻게 매개되는지를 시각적으로 탐색합니다.
작품은 테이트 모던, 뉴욕 현대미술관, 구겐하임, 퐁피두센터, 리움, 국립현대미술관 등 세계 유수 미술관에 소장되어 있으며, 현재도 런던과 서울을 중심으로 활발한 작업을 이어가고 있습니다.

Hoon Kwak (b. 1941)
Hoon Kwak, born in 1941, is a seminal Korean painter known for his large-scale abstract works that blend gestural energy with metaphysical themes. After studying Western painting at Seoul National University, he pursued further education in fine arts at California State University, Long Beach. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1975 and began exhibiting actively in Los Angeles, where his first solo show was held at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery in 1981.
His practice is rooted in an exploration of time, energy, and memory through dynamic brushstrokes and saturated color fields. Iconic series such as Qi (氣) from the 1980s, Geop (劫) from the 1990s, and his recent Halaayt paintings reflect a continuity of spiritual inquiry, engaging with shamanic motifs, cosmic cycles, and bodily memory. Kwak’s paintings evoke a primordial temporality and act as visual records of inner time and transformation. He represented Korea at the 1995 Venice Biennale and was awarded the Lee Jung Seop Art Prize in 2023.
Beom Kim (b. 1963)
Beom Kim, born in 1963, is a leading figure in Korean conceptual art. He received his BFA in Painting from Seoul National University and his MFA from UCLA. Kim’s work is characterized by its use of language, repetition, and systems of logic to challenge conventional distinctions between art and life, thought and action.
Rather than representing memory through imagery, Kim exposes its invisible structures—its habits, its rhythms, and its tendency to fragment or fade. Through drawings, objects, installations, and texts, he reveals the cognitive and perceptual frames through which memory takes form. His works are held in major international collections including Tate Modern, MoMA, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia. He is a recipient of the Ilmin Art Prize (2001) and the Gwangju Biennale Prize (2004).
Woong Kim (b. 1944)
Woong Kim, born in 1944, is a Korean painter who has lived and worked in New York for over five decades. A graduate of Hongik University, he further studied at the Art Students League of New York, where he developed a style that merges lyrical abstraction with meditative materiality.
His paintings are built through the layering of brushstrokes and color fields, capturing emotion and memory not as narrative but as felt texture and time. The accumulated marks and surfaces serve as visual residues of psychological experience—slow, deliberate, and deeply atmospheric. Kim’s work is held in the collections of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul Museum of Art, and the Korean Cultural Center in New York and Washington, D.C.
Do Ho Suh (b. 1962)
Do Ho Suh, born in 1962, is an internationally acclaimed artist whose work addresses issues of identity, memory, and migration through architectural forms and textile-based installations. He studied traditional painting at Seoul National University and later earned degrees in sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design and Yale University.
Best known for his translucent fabric structures that replicate his childhood home, corridors, and domestic spaces, Suh transforms private memory into shared spatial experience. His works function as both memorials and metaphysical inquiries, asking how memory inhabits architecture and how the self is shaped by place.
His work is in the permanent collections of Tate Modern, MoMA, Centre Pompidou, Guggenheim Museum, Leeum Museum of Art, and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea. Based between London and Seoul, Suh continues to explore the emotional architecture of belonging and displacement.
