Almost Landscape

2GIL29 GALLERY is pleased to present Almost Landscape (풍경미수 風景未遂), a group exhibition featuring Yeonyong Kim, Choonghyun Roh, Dongwook Suh, Doojin Ahn, and Yongkook Jeong, on view from June 13 to July 11, 2026.

This exhibition approaches landscape not as a fixed representation, but as a dynamic process that is constantly deferred, transformed, and reconstituted. Through their distinct visual languages and painterly methodologies, the five artists evoke specific places and scenes while simultaneously disrupting the conventions of singular representation. Moving fluidly between representation and abstraction, sensation and memory, reality and psychology, their works explore the multilayered possibilities embedded within the notion of landscape.

The exhibition title, Almost Landscape (풍경未遂), refers to a landscape that remains unfinished, or perhaps to possibilities that lie beyond landscape itself. Here, the term misu (未遂) does not imply failure. Rather, it points to a state of perception and sensation that can never be fully resolved, and therefore remains perpetually open, evolving, and incomplete.

Almost Landscape proposes landscape not as a mere depiction of nature or a visual subject, but as a field where memory and sensation, materiality and psychology intersect. The landscapes presented by these five artists resist completion, continually oscillating between formation and dissolution. In doing so, they invite viewers to reconsider how we perceive, remember, and imagine the world around us.

Almost Landscape

Text by Doojin Ahn

We head toward the North Pole. We set off with pounding hearts. Our resolve and determination were proportional to our preparation and training, but consecutive clashes with nature quickly cool the burning passion of our departure.

We move forward with our backs to the sun, which stays up all day, but the cold grows harsh and the visibility is faint. Still, inside the tent with the crew, it is as warm as a campfire in a cabin. We debate our navigation methods, average speed, and direction. The white breath from our conversation scatters like cigarette smoke, and the serious discussion warms our bodies in place of alcohol.

When passing through ice mountains and valleys created by drift ice, each of us proposed our own way. Risk is proportional to speed, but it is also proportional to time. With risk as our mediator, we must compromise somewhere between speed and time. We cannot do many things at once.

The most dangerous thing is not the cold, but the boredom. Cold binds life together through fear, but boredom scatters the self. I look. I breathe. I walk. White days, faint nights, black wind. The illusion of exploration, the expectation of arrival, the repetition of numb pain. Floundering in between, I just keep moving forward. Boredom splits me into a yellow 'me', a gray 'me', and a blue 'me'.
40 kilometers before the destination. From the beginning, it was a white landscape. (With a little more color, it is only a faint blue.) And even now, it is a white landscape. The only way to know our direction is through measurement and recording. The path to 90 degrees North Latitude does not happen by our will alone. One day, the distance we drifted back while sleeping was longer than the distance we marched. We effectively retreated 10 kilometers.

90 degrees North Latitude. From a planetary scale, it is harder for a human to find the exact location of the North Pole than it is to walk 817 kilometers. Anywhere around here, the North Star is directly overhead, so it wouldn't be strange to declare arrival at this point. However, unlike when facing danger, everyone’s judgment is divided.

"K," who questions the direction, deferred judgment, saying we need to replace the broken compass. "J," who handles data sensitively, readjusted the speed, distance, and direction, explaining that we fell short. "S," who loves stories, quotes an Inuit advice to follow the stars, saying we have already passed it. Contrary to expectations, "N" says that due to the nature of moving glaciers, we will repeat getting closer and moving further away somewhere around here. For him, who sought the reality of identical places through factuality, perhaps the Arctic landscape had already arrived when we departed. My interest rests only on the ice, so it does not matter where this is.

Summing up everyone's calculations, the North Pole is fluid.

In fact, the North Pole moves. The Magnetic North Pole, where the N-pole of a compass points, constantly changes its location due to shifts in the Earth's internal magnetic field. Unlike planetary position changes, the North Pole on sea ice also changes along with the movement of ocean currents. Perhaps we are looking for fixed coordinates on top of something that moves. Since the landscape was the same from the beginning, the North Pole exists only as a concept.

Now, passing the North Pole, we intend to cross the white landscape to the nearest village. A place closer than where we started. Until the village appears, we walk in place again. Where is our destination? Walking inside a landscape means that we are inside the landscape. The only thing there is the landscape. A brushstroke on a white flat surface creates a small thickness, like footprints on pale ice, and will eventually become a landscape. Whether we intended it or not, whether we arrived or fell short. Almost Landscape. The story crossing the square Arctic is, roughly speaking, like this.

Yeonyong Kim

Biography

Yeonyong Kim (b.1973) has continuously explored the structures of sensation and the relationships within images, questioning the processes through which images are formed and perceived. His work approaches images not as simple representations of figures, landscapes, or objects, but as sites where sensation and thought intersect. Through layered image fragments, overlapping pictorial planes, and compositions charged with tension, the boundaries between reality and unreality remain fluid, revealing new possibilities for perception. In particular, Kim focuses on the structures through which images operate and generate meaning, investigating the processes of cognition that underlie visual experience. The various forms and traces accumulated across the surface do not converge into a fixed meaning but continually establish new relationships, encouraging viewers to encounter familiar worlds through unfamiliar modes of perception. Currently a professor at the School of Visual Arts, Korea National University of Arts, Kim has developed a distinctive artistic practice through his critical exploration of contemporary visual culture and the conditions of image-making.

----

Within our homes and families, countless indescribable affective forces are constantly at work. They are not always homely; at times they may appear strange, uncanny, or even unsettling. The emotions associated with home seem to move between stability and anxiety, happiness and unhappiness, satisfaction and dissatisfaction, tranquility and boredom, yet they always exceed such oppositions. Through various methodologies of collage, these works examine forms of affect that circulate between the many objects inhabiting domestic space and the bodies of the subjects surrounded by them. By recontextualizing the material life of art, the indeterminacy and uncertainty of form, and the labor and play inherent in artistic creation, the works consider how the affective realm generated by the autonomous world of fragmented images may emerge for contemporary emotional and affective subjects.

Choonghyun Roh

Biography

Choonghyun Roh (b.1970) has long captured everyday scenes from urban peripheries, aging alleyways, and redevelopment districts through his characteristically contemplative gaze. Familiar yet vanishing landscapes are transformed within his paintings into psychological spaces imbued with traces of time and emotional density. Observing scenes often left undocumented amid urban transformation, Roh reveals the accumulated layers of memory and feeling embedded within the landscape. In particular, he has focused on places and environments disappearing amid the rapid changes of contemporary cities, exploring points where personal memory intersects with collective and social time. Moving beyond the simple depiction of urban scenery, his work evokes the traces of life and emotion embedded within the spaces we inhabit, offering a nuanced portrait of the contemporary city. Roh is currently a professor in the Department of Fine Arts at Seoul National University of Science and Technology and continues to exhibit actively in Korea and abroad.

----

I believe that every painter has subjects that are particularly difficult to approach. For me, these difficult subjects emerged from both emotional and technical limitations. Night and nature were among them. I have always hesitated before the richness and profundity of nature. To paint a landscape, there must be a resonance between the landscape and one’s inner state, yet I often felt emotionally impoverished when faced with depicting the freshness of spring or the abundance of summer. With such a state of mind, it was difficult to embrace the fullness of all seasons. Furthermore, rather than approaching landscape through sensory experience alone, I sought to portray psychological and social conditions through painting, which inevitably limited my choice of seasons. While representational methods remain meaningful to me in their capacity to convey the factual presence of things, effectively expressing the complexity of nature through representation has remained a significant technical challenge.

Dongwook Suh

Biography

Dongwook Suh (b.1974) has developed a painterly world that drifts between reality and unreality through organic forms, flowing movements, and imagery evocative of living organisms. After graduating from the Department of Painting at Hongik University, he continued his studies at the École Nationale Supérieure d’Arts Paris-Cergy in France, where he further developed his distinctive visual language. Within his canvases, forms continually emerge and disappear, while the boundaries between nature and body, landscape and sensation, become fluidly intertwined. Treating painting not as a fixed image but as a living state of perception, Ahn unfolds an unstable and ever-shifting understanding of reality across the pictorial surface. He has participated in residency programs at the Nanji Art Studio of the Seoul Museum of Art and the Changdong Residency of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, and continues to exhibit actively through major institutions and international art fairs.

----

Within the genre of figurative painting, I explore emotions such as melancholy, solitude, and anxiety while situating them within the realm of beauty. When the subject of a painting is the human figure, viewers can readily empathize with its emotional dimensions, allowing its themes to expand into broader reflections on life. In my recent works, individual paintings are composed like cinematic sequences, suggesting a continuous narrative of encounter and separation between a man and a woman. Through the portrayal of two individuals who occupy the same space yet remain emotionally estranged, I seek to express the loneliness and isolation experienced by individuals within contemporary society.

Within his canvases, forms continuously emerge and disappear, while the boundaries between nature and body, landscape and sensation, become loosely intertwined. Treating painting not as a fixed image but as a living state of perception, Ahn unfolds an unstable and fluid understanding of reality across the pictorial surface. In particular, he has explored the materiality and vitality of nature as well as the processes through which images come into being, focusing on the fundamental possibilities of painting itself. Moving beyond direct representation, his work visualizes the perpetual movement of life and the flow of sensation, revealing the unfamiliar and primal energies that exist beneath the surface of the familiar world.

----

Art at the turn of the millennium declared that “everything is possible.” At the time, however, I interpreted this statement as meaning that “nothing remains.” The prevailing discourse celebrated the arrival of a true age of art, claiming that all historical forms were available to us and that all structures of power had been dismantled. Yet this also implied that everything had been destroyed. For the skilled and the gifted, such a condition may have been a blessing; to me, however, it appeared as a wasteland. I chose to take that wasteland as my point of departure. Beginning anew within the structures of nature itself and the material world—areas untouched by the historically liberated forms of art—I discovered what I considered the smallest unit of the image.

Yongkook Jeong

Biography

Yongkook Jeong (b.1972) has reinterpreted the traditional sensibilities of East Asian painting and the concept of yeobaek (emptiness) through a contemporary painterly language, offering new ways of thinking about landscape. The traces of scenery that emerge through washes, layering, and expanses of open space evoke the flow of time, memory, and contemplation rather than representing a specific location. By dismantling and reconfiguring familiar images of nature, Jeong expands landscape into a realm of inner perception and psychological space. In particular, drawing upon the concept of Yumok (遊目), or the wandering gaze, he investigates ways in which multiple layers of time, memory, and sensation coexist within a single landscape. Rather than depicting nature as it appears, his work reveals the very process of seeing and remembering, inviting viewers to reconsider the relationship between landscape and perception. He is currently a professor in the Department of Painting at Yeungnam University and continues to expand the sensibilities of traditional ink painting within the context of contemporary art.

----

Yumok (遊目), or “wandering gaze,” begins from a state in which the eye does not remain fixed. It is not a singular center or stable point of view, but a gaze that continually moves and responds to the world. I do not attempt to represent a specific object or landscape. Instead, I seek to reveal the process of seeing itself and the fragments of a world that are constantly reconfigured through movement. We often assume that we perceive the world from a fixed position, yet in reality the gaze never stops. The eyes move from one object to another, memory summons distant places, and perception layers different moments of time upon one another. Yumok is a concept that reveals the structure of this visual experience. The gaze does not belong to a fixed subject; rather, it wanders through environments, time, and memory, continuously transforming itself. Landscapes glimpsed in passing while in motion do not coalesce into a single, stable view. Instead, they generate continual ruptures and disjunctions. Within these fissures, I seek to reveal that the world is not composed of a single image, but of a multiplicity of perspectives.
