대한민국 미디어 아트 1세대의 개척자 최종범은 기술을 인문학적 사유로 확장해 온 대표적인 미디어 아티스트이자 영상 연출가이다. 그는 1990년대 후반, 한국 사회에 ‘VJ(Video Jockey)’라는 개념조차 낯설던 시기에 활동을 시작하며 새로운 시각적 문법을 제시했다. 정지된 프레임을 넘어 음악의 비트와 시간의 흐름에 맞춰 이미지를 실시간으로 구성하는 라이브 퍼포먼스를 통해, 그는 미디어를 감각적 사건으로 전환시키며 동시대 예술의 지평을 넓혀왔다. 최종범에게 기술은 단순한 도구가 아니라 인간의 감정과 인식을 전달하는 하나의 ‘빛의 언어’이며, 그의 작업은 기술과 예술의 유기적 결합을 지속적으로 실험해 온 궤적 위에 놓여 있다.

Jongbum Choi and the Digital Narratives of Media Art
Jongbum Choi is widely recognised as a pioneering figure of first-generation media art in South Korea—an artist and visual director who has continuously transformed technology into a form of humanistic inquiry. Emerging in the late 1990s, at a time when the concept of the “VJ (Video Jockey)” was still unfamiliar within Korean society, Choi introduced a new visual language that expanded the boundaries of contemporary art. Moving beyond static images confined to fixed frames, he began composing live visual performances in real time, synchronising image, sound, and rhythm to the flow of time itself. For Choi, technology has never been a mere tool; it is a language of light through which human emotion, perception, and memory are conveyed.
Choi’s artistic trajectory extends far beyond national narratives, positioning him within an international discourse on media art. His participation in major platforms such as the Seoul Mediacity Biennale solidified his role in shaping the aesthetic direction of Korean media art alongside his contemporaries. Among his most significant projects is the large-scale media façade presented at Angkor Wat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. By layering digital imagery onto an ancient architectural relic, Choi created a powerful convergence of history and technology—an unprecedented intervention that marked one of the earliest instances of media art realised within a protected heritage site. This monumental work established his reputation as an artist capable of navigating the delicate intersection of cultural legacy and contemporary digital expression.
In parallel, Choi has led major national-scale projects, including his role as video director for the PyeongChang Winter Olympics. 최종범(1972년 서울 출생)은 시대를 선도해 온 빛의 선구자로서, ‘빛의 고고학’과 공간의 현상학적 재구성에 있어 한국 미디어 아트에서 독보적인 위치를 확립해 온 작가이다. 지난 수십 년간 그는 시간 기반 시각 매체(time-based visual media)의 개념적 지형을 확장해 온 대한민국 미디어 아트 1세대의 핵심 인물로 평가받아 왔다. 기술을 단순한 도구가 아닌 인문학적 사유를 담아내는 정교한 ‘빛의 언어’로 다루어 온 그의 작업은, 일본 고베예술공과대학교에서 시각정보디자인을 전공하며 축적한 공학적 정밀함을 바탕으로 구조적 사고와 높은 시각적 밀도를 동시에 획득해 왔다.
1990년대 후반, 디지털 테크놀로지가 예술 언어로 본격적으로 정착되기 이전부터 최종범은 영상과 사운드를 실시간으로 구성하는 ‘비주얼 퍼포먼스(Visual Performance)’라는 전위적 작업 방식을 제시해 왔다. 이는 정지된 프레임 중심의 시각 예술을 해체하고, 관객을 작품의 외부가 아닌 감각적 경험의 내부로 끌어들이는 수행적 실천이었다. 그의 작업은 미술관의 화이트 큐브를 넘어 건축물의 파사드와 도시 공간으로 확장되었으며, 무용·오페라·교향악 등 다양한 장르와의 유기적 결합을 통해 동시대적 ‘총체 예술(Gesamtkunstwerk)’의 가능성을 지속적으로 제시해 왔다. 이러한 실천은 오늘날 미디어 아트가 일상적 감각 환경 속에 깊이 자리 잡게 된 흐름을 형성하는 데 중요한 역할을 했다.
“우리가 실제로 보고 듣는 것은 무엇인가”라는 근본적인 질문에서 출발한 그의 탐구는 《미디어시티 서울 2002》, 《상하이 비엔날레(2004)》 등 주요 국제 전시를 거치며 심화되었다. 그는 건축적 공간을 단순한 배경이 아닌 능동적인 협업의 파트너로 인식하고, 물리적 구조물 위에 빛의 레이어를 중첩시키는 방식으로 공간의 인식을 재구성해 왔다. 이러한 작업은 공공 공간에서의 미디어 아트가 나아갈 수 있는 새로운 방향성을 제시한 사례로 평가된다.

Artist Biography
Jongbum Choi (born 1972, Seoul) is a pioneering figure who has led his era as an artist of light, establishing an unrivalled position within Korean media art through his exploration of the archaeology of light and the phenomenological reconfiguration of space. Over the past several decades, he has been regarded as a central figure of the first generation of Korean media artists, expanding the conceptual terrain of time-based visual media. Treating technology not as a mere tool but as a refined language of light that carries humanistic reflection, his practice has acquired both structural thinking and a high degree of visual density, grounded in the engineering precision he cultivated while majoring in Visual Communication Design at Kobe Design University in Japan.
Since the late 1990s, prior to the full establishment of digital technology as an artistic language, Choi has introduced the radical working method of Visual Performance, in which image and sound are composed in real time. This approach constituted a performative practice that dismantled frame-centered visual art and drew the audience not to the exterior of the work but into the interior of sensory experience itself. His work has expanded beyond the closed space of the white cube into architectural façades and urban environments, and through organic collaborations with dance, opera, and symphonic music, he has continuously proposed contemporary possibilities of Gesamtkunstwerk. These practices played an important role in shaping the conditions through which media art has become deeply embedded within everyday perceptual environments today.
Beginning from the fundamental question, “What do we actually see and hear?”, his inquiry was deepened through major international exhibitions such as Media City Seoul 2002 and the Shanghai Biennale (2004). Choi conceives architectural space not as a passive background but as an active collaborative partner, and has reconfigured spatial perception by layering light onto physical structures. Such works are evaluated as examples that suggest new directions for media art in public space.
In addition, Choi has continuously engaged with the global art world through international networks spanning from Chicago to Miami. At major art fairs, including DIVA (Digital & Video Art Fair), he has performed digital sensory data in real time, transforming fixed artistic forms into fluid structures of experience. His installations, in which space, audience, and technology are organically integrated, present one of the most three-dimensional depths of aesthetic experience that media art can reach—namely, a manifestation of the digital sublime—and have drawn sustained attention from international critics.

빛과 소리, 생동하는 존재의 언어
나는 빛과 소리를 하나의 언어로 받아들인다.
눈으로 보고 귀로 듣는 감각의 차원을 넘어, 이 두 요소는 공간 안에서 끊임없이 변형되며 반응하는 살아 있는 존재처럼 작동한다. 나의 작업은 이 존재들이 서로 교차하고 분리되며 생성하는 순간의 흐름을 포착하고, 그것을 하나의 ‘시각적 시간’으로 재구성하는 과정이다.
우리는 매일 빛과 소리 속에 놓여 있지만, 실제로 무엇을 보고 무엇을 듣고 있는지에 대해서는 쉽게 단정하지 못한다. 이 질문은 오랫동안 나의 작업을 작동시키는 출발점이었다. 나는 현실을 지배하는 물리적 공간을 재현하기보다, 공간을 구성하는 근원적인 요소들을 분해하고 재조합한다. 그 위에 새로운 감각의 층위를 구축함으로써, 관객의 경험을 다른 시지각적 상태로 이동시키고자 한다.
비주얼 퍼포먼스: 공간을 무대로, 빛을 조형 언어로
1990년대 이후 나는 영상과 사운드를 실시간으로 구성하는 ‘비주얼 퍼포먼스(Visual Performance)’라는 수행적 방식을 통해 작업을 지속해왔다. 이 과정에서 빛의 움직임과 소리의 리듬은 시간의 축 위에서 작동하는 조형 언어로 전환된다. 빛은 매체를 넘어 하나의 존재가 되고, 공간은 무대이자 동시에 끊임없이 갱신되는 구조가 된다.
나는 이 요소들이 충돌하고 중첩되며 사라졌다가 다시 출현하는 과정을 시각적 사건으로 구성하고, 관객을 그 과정 속으로 위치시킨다. 작품 속 기하학적이고 추상적인 시각 언어는 의미를 전달하기보다 반복과 변형을 통해 감각의 패턴을 생성하며, 물리적 공간의 인식을 지속적으로 교란하고 재배열한다.
관객은 작품을 외부에서 관찰하는 위치에 머무르지 않는다. 빛이 만들어내는 공간의 생성과 소멸, 확장과 수축을 따라 이동하며 시간의 흐름을 신체적으로 인지하게 된다. 이때 공간은 고정된 장소가 아니라, 끊임없이 반응하는 유기적 시스템으로 기능한다.
나는 전시장, 건축의 내·외부, 자연 속 허공, 무대 공연, 대형 디지털 미디어 환경 등 다양한 조건의 공간에서 작업한다. 이는 빛과 소리가 놓이는 맥락이 달라질 때마다 작업의 구조와 호흡 또한 근본적으로 달라지기 때문이다. 공간은 배경이 아니라, 작업을 성립시키는 또 하나의 행위자이며 협업의 파트너다.
나의 작업은 기술적이면서 동시에 감각적이고, 수행적이다. 관객은 빛이 만들어내는 긴장과 이완의 리듬을 따라가며, 하나의 확장된 시각적 음악 안으로 진입하게 된다.
내가 지향하는 것은 빛과 소리가 관객의 감각 속에서 발생시키는 순간적인 진실성이다. 끊임없이 변화하며 완결되지 않는 이 상태, 언제나 현재진행형으로 존재하는 감각의 장을 관객과 공유하는 것—그것이 내가 말하는 비주얼 퍼포먼스이며, 나의 작업의 본질이다.

Artist Statement
Light and Sound: A Living Language
I perceive light and sound as a single language.
Beyond what can be seen by the eye or heard by the ear, these elements operate as living entities—constantly shifting, responding, and transforming within space. My work seeks to capture the flow of moments generated as they intersect and separate, reconfiguring these events into what I describe as visual time.
We exist within light and sound every day, yet we rarely question what it truly means to see or to hear. This uncertainty has long been the point of departure for my practice. Rather than reproducing physical space as it appears, I dismantle the fundamental components that constitute space itself. By recomposing these elements and layering new sensory conditions, I aim to shift the viewer’s experience toward a different perceptual state.
Visual Performance: Space as Stage, Light as Form
Since the 1990s, I have worked through an experimental, performative approach I describe as Visual Performance, in which image and sound are composed in real time. Within this process, the movement of light and the rhythm of sound are transformed into sculptural languages operating along the axis of time. Light moves beyond its role as a medium to become a presence, while space functions simultaneously as a stage and a continuously evolving structure.
I construct visual events in which these elements collide, overlap, disappear, and re-emerge, positioning the viewer within the unfolding process. The geometric and abstract visual languages in my work do not aim to convey meaning. Instead, through repetition and transformation, they generate sensory patterns that disrupt and reorganise the perception of physical space.
The viewer does not remain an external observer. Moving through cycles of spatial emergence and dissolution—expansion and contraction—they experience the passage of time bodily. In this state, space ceases to be fixed and instead operates as a responsive, organic system.
My work takes place across a range of spatial conditions: exhibition spaces, architectural interiors and façades, open air environments, performance stages, and large-scale digital media settings. Each context fundamentally alters the rhythm and structure of the work. Space is not a backdrop, but an active agent—an essential collaborator in the formation of the work.
My practice is technical, sensory, and performative at once. As viewers follow the tensions and releases produced by light, they enter a state akin to inhabiting an expanded form of visual music.
What I ultimately seek is the momentary truth that light and sound generate within perception. To share this unstable, unfinished, and continuously unfolding field of sensation with the viewer—this is what I call visual performance, and it is the core of my practice.
