2GIL29 GALLERY will present the artist MY Q’s exhibition <Everyday> at Shinsegae Department Store located in Myeong-dong, and it runs from forthcoming 9 Nov. to 29 Dec. The Shinsegae Department Myeon-dong branch is the head shop among all 19 branches and takes a role to keep the history of the department alive, being placed at where the first department store of Korea used to be in the 1930’s. The department captures not only customers with classical taste but also MZ generation is keen on trends by hosting a wide range of brands from luxury brands to rising designer’s brands, and it led to its growth trend in this pandemic period. And in particular,the Myeong-dong branch is special in that it is at the center of Seoul so that it can allow visitors to easily get to the tourist areas such as Namsan, Namdaemoon market, and so on.
It is quite intriguing when taking a look at MY Q’s profile, who will be having the exhibition at the magical place, Myeong-dong Sinsegae department store, which has caught the ever-changing public’s eye and kept them there. Since MY Q started his career in 1997, he has been actively communicating with the public through music as an all-around artist, not staying in the role of singer-songwriter, but carrying out all multi-disciplinary works related to media creation such as covering production, creative direction, cinematography, song writing, arrangements, and mixing. And as a well-known singer-songwriter, he already released 184 songs including 8 studio albums, 4 Ep albums, and 54 singles and he performed over 300 times in multiple tours and live shows. And he entered a new path of art creation in earnest after the exhibition, which was <What are you doing the rest of your life> at 2GIL29 GALLERY in 2021, enchanting people in the art circle within a short time. And he received a great response while he consecutively participated in 2021 KIAF, ART BUSAN, and 2022 KIAF. The rhythms that he discreetly created on the manuscript paper note by note for the past years naturally flow into his canvas and fill it with visual melodies created by unique patterns and symbols. In particular, his raw but free-flowing brush stroke and sensuous colors fill the canvas with powerful energy, and his work has allured not only budding collectors mainly from MZ generation, but also numerous existing art enthusiasts, which led him to be one of the most emerging artists in the art scene.
And in this upcoming exhibition, he now conveys ordinary people’s everyday lives that they follow faithfully. The artist considers the people who focus on what’s given to them ahead regardless not knowing if their future would come, as a flower quietly bursts into blossom from the cracks of the cements. He believes that only those faithful and sincere times that they live through will give us the key to find the answer of our lives, and expresses his gratitude for us to be on the journey to discover himself. As the artist featured in the past exhibition, there were a flurry of questions on how we could manage to our lives under the different circumstances that we were constrained to limit our living radius, when we got into the era of “New Normal”. And the bombarded questions necessarily resulted in realization of how precious our daily lives were. The joy of having an ordinary day grew as we went through the experience of losing someone close to us just a day and being close to the moment that he or she could have been the one to come close to death.
After experiencing those days, the artist shows gratitude for the fact that we can wake up every single morning and meet a new day with a fresh mind. And his work that praises us with cheerful messages gives warm comfort to people who live their lives to the full, not having a false expectation of a future which is not guaranteed to come. “While we endure the repetitive times to death same as a flower bursts into blossom from the cracks of cements under the harsh circumstance to survive, small things can be piled up mountain-high and they turn into a big mountain. Artist Introuction
My Q was born in Seoul, Korea. He is a multi-disciplinary artist, capable of songwriting, composing, arranging, mixing, cinematography, producing, and stage designing. The artist has done over 300 tours and live performances, released 8 albums, 4 EP albums and 54 single albums (184 songs) from 1997. He has been communicating with the public through music, and now he entered a new path of art creation with the exhibition at 2GIL29 GALLERY in 2021. As a musician who has been working on creating artistic inspiration for more than 20 years, he said, "Music and art fall into the same category of art", and truly devoted himself to painting that allowed him to face his inner side. He intensely built up his art world through facing himself for more than 13 hours a day, and is indeed solid and attractive. He never went through a formal art course and his various attempts are so diversely colorful that it feels meaningless to place a limit. The artist’s unique painting technique ‘Dub da’ is a process of overlapping layers over and over again inspired from the process when creating music. First create rhythm with drums and bases and create melody with instruments like piano and guitar. The artist builds up diverse texture by painting and splashing colors with palette knives, brushes, paper, and hands. After this process the artist covers the whole canvas with a background color. He created the rhythm by pointing out note by note as a musician, now he spreads visual melodies on the canvas with unique patterns and symbols within the painting. He asks questions about the rapid change in the social environment after COVID, dreaming of a work with a theme that connects us together through containing everyone's concern who’s living in the contemporary era. Saying that it feels like it is not a limited issue in an individual life but a problem that everyone has to overcome together, he explores and expresses something that sparks in ordinary life. His paintings with raw brush marks are closest to pure creation that suggests numbers of struggles and success he encountered as an artist. It is interesting that the artist’s paintings seem to throw questions to the viewers and the viewers take a journey in their lives to come up with the answers to the questions.

2GIL29 GALLERY <이길이구 갤러리>는 오는 11월 9일 부터 12월 29일까지 명동에 위치한 신세계 백화점에서 MY Q 마이큐 작가의 ‘영원한 날들 E v e r y d a y’ 전시를 선보인다. 이번 전시를 함께 하는 신세계 백화점 명동 지점은, 전국 19지점 중 본점으로 1930년대 한국 최초의 백화점이 있던 자리에 위치해 지리적으로도 대한민국 백화점의 역사를 잇고 있을 뿐 아니라 럭셔리 브랜드부터 신진 디자이너 브랜드까지 골고루 입점해, 클래식한 취향을 가진 고객층부터 트렌드에 예민한 MZ 세대까지 사로잡으며 코로나 시기에도 성장세를 보인 명실공히 한국을 대표하는 백화점이다. 특히 명동 본점은 서울 도심에 위치하여 남산, 남대문시장 등 다양한 관광 기회도 제공한다.
시시각각 변하는 대중의 시선을 이끄는 이런 마법같은 장소로 찾아갈 마이큐 작가의 이력을 들여다보면 자못 흥미롭다. 마이큐는 1997년 음악계에 입문, 단순히 싱어송라이터에 머무르지 않고 작사,작곡, 편곡, 믹싱 작업 등 음악 뿐 아니라 크리에이티브 디렉터 등 미디어 전반의 창작 작업을 두루 섭렵하는 재능 있는 아티스트로서 300회 이상의 공연, 8장의 정규, EP 앨범 4개, 싱글 음원 54개, 총 184곡을 통해 MY Q라는 뮤지션으로서 대중들과 소통해왔다. 음악에 자신의 예술세계를 담아왔던 그는 지난 2021년 3월 이길이구 갤러리 기획전시<What are you doing the rest of your life?>를 계기로 본격적으로 미술이라는 새로운 창작의 세계로 접어들어 단기간에 평단을 매료시켰으며, 2021 KIAF, ART BUSAN, 2022 KIAF에 연이어 참여해 큰 호평을 받았다. 수십년간 오선지에 쌓아 올렸던 음표는 자연스럽게 흘러나와 이제 그의 캔버스 작업을 기호화된 시각적 선율로 채운다. 특히 거친 듯 자유로운 붓질과 감각적인 색상은 화면을 강렬한 생명력으로 가득 채우고, 이는 MZ 세대에 기반한 수많은 신진 컬렉터들 뿐 아니라 기존 미술 애호가들도 매혹시켰고 미술계의 주목받는 신예 작가로 부상했다.
그런 그가 이번 전시를 통해 반복되는 매일을 성실히 살아가는 평범한 우리들의 이야기를 전한다. 마이큐 작가는 기약할 수 없는 미래를 알면서도 오늘 나에게 주어진 일들에 집중하는 우리들을, 시멘트 사이에 고요히 피어난 한 송이 꽃으로 비유한다. 버텨내고 살아내는 이런 충실하고 진실한 시간만이 삶의 답을 해줄 수 있을 거라고 얘기하며, 매일 새로운 마음으로 나를 찾아가는 여정에 놓인 것에 감사함을 표한다. 마이큐 작가가 지난 전시에서 말했듯 ‘뉴 노멀’ 시대로 접어들면서 제한된 일상 생활 속 달라진 삶의 지형도를 어떻게 꾸려가야 되는지에 대한 질문들이 쏟아졌고 그 질문의 끝은 필연적으로 일상의 소중함에 대한 환기로 이어졌다. 하루 아침에 소중한 사람들을 잃는 경험을 하기도 하고, 본인이 그런 위험한 순간을 직면하기도 하는 상황 속에서 평안한 내일을 맞이할 수 있는 기쁨은 커졌다.
그 속에서 마이큐 작가는 일상을 꾸준히 지켜가는 우리들의 하루를 들여다보고 매일 새로운 아침에 눈떠서 어제보다 나은 내일을 꿈꿀 수 있는 것에 감사한다. 기약 없는 미래에 대한 기대보다 오늘 이 시간을 충만히 채워가는 오늘의 우리에게 찬사를 던지며 응원하는 그의 작품은 따뜻한 위로를 준다. “지겹도록 반복적인 시간 속 마치 시멘트 사이에 고요히 피어난 한 송이 꽃처럼 생명을 유지하며 작은 것 들이 쌓이고 올려져 큰 산이 되어갑니다. 그 시간만이 대답해줄 수 있는 것이며 그 시간만이 기억할 것입니다. (MY Q 마이큐 작가노트)"
작가소개
서울 출생. MY Q는 1997년부터 싱어송라이터로서 퍼포먼스 전반의 기획, 연출부터 음악 프로듀싱까지 총괄하는 만능 엔터테이너로 활동해오며 300회 이상의 투어 및 라이브 공연, 정규앨범 8장, EP 앨범 4장, 싱글 음원 54개 모두 총 184곡을 발매하며 대중음악계에서 나름의 입지를 다져온 뮤지션이다. 음악을 통해 대중과 소통해온 그가 2021년 이길이구 갤러리와의 전시를 계기로 본격적으로 미술이라는 새로운 창작의 길로 접어들었다. 지난 20여년간의 음악활동에서 예술적 영감을 창작물로 구현해내는 작업을 해왔던 음악가로서 그는 “음악과 미술은 결국 예술의 한 범주에 속한다”며 좀 더 솔직한 내면을 마주할 수 있게 해준 캔버스 작업에 열중했다.하루 13시간이상 온전히 자신과 마주하며 치열하게 쌓아올린 그의 작업 세계는 굉장히 견고하고 매력적이다. 정규 미술교육을 거치지 않은 그만의 자유롭고 다양한 시도는 한계를 짓는 것이 무의미하게 느껴질 만큼 다채롭다. ‘DubDa(덮다)’라고 스스로 명명한 MY Q의 독특한 화법은 그가 곡을 만들 때 타악기로 리듬을 만든 다음 피아노와 기타처럼 선율을 더하는 악기를 쌓아 올려나갔던 것을 응용한 것으로, 캔버스 위에 나이프, 붓, 종이, 손 등을 이용해 물감을 칠하고 튀기며 표현한 뒤 바탕색으로 덮는 방식으로 진행된다. 음표를 하나하나 짚어가며 리듬을 직조해온 그는 이제 캔버스 위 물감으로 화면 위에 기호화 된 시각적 선율을 펼친다. 그는 동시대를 살아가는 모두의 고민이 담긴 주제를 통해 함께 연결될 수 있는 작업을 꿈꾸며 코로나 이후 급속도로 변화된 사회환경에 대한 질문을 던진다. 개인의 삶에 한정된 이슈가 아니라 모두가 함께 극복해야 할 문제로 느껴진다는 그는 평범하고 지루한 일상 속에서 반짝거리는 무언가를 탐구하며 표현해나간다. 순수하며 다듬어지지 않고 창작의 본질과 가장 근접한 순간들을 표현하는 그의 그림은 아티스트로서 품었던 가장 본질적인 고뇌의 시간들의 결과물에 다름 아니다. 답을 제시하지 않고 열린 질문을 던지는 듯한 그의 작품 속에서 관람자 자신의 삶에 질문을 던지고 대답을 찾아가는 여정이 흥미롭다.
