LES LIEUX DE MÉMOIRE

It is November, the beginning of winter. 2GIL29 GALLERY is inviting you to an exhibition by the artist Jaeeun Jeon, who uses paint and thread together on the canvas to show the harmony of sewing and painting from the 12th to the 30th of November. Having majored in Western painting, she has been working on her own sophisticated and sensuous work, presenting the accumulation of individual life and thoughts in visual language beyond the limits of materials. Art, not separated from life, tells the story of all the emotions and memories experienced in daily life—shared with oneself or others—and places that stayed in it.

Sometimes, she reprints and removes her memories from the inside with paint, controlling her aesthetic energy according to her will, while some other times, she goes back and forth between her real experiences and imagination, which even-tually made her become a prominent female painter in Korean art circles with her outstanding artistic sensibility.

When you face the works that are constantly exploring the formative effects by mo-bilizing objects on the canvas, you can see that they are expanding into their own areas that no one can imitate. In particular, this exhibition at the 2GIL29 GALLERY creates an abstract screen composition with refined and sensuous clumps of free brush strokes, which creates a multi-faceted memory space in different ways for each canvas. You can see that the Matier effect is still important on the surface with some emphasis through out the paintings, that is the result of the steady work for over the past 20 years. As she has been silently following her difficult path—working for both her family and artworks—I think she will continue to build and celebrate the world of sculpture.

Through Jaeeun Jeon’s new works “Places of Memory,” which interprets meta-phorical beings found in our lives in a pictorial way in our works, I hope it will be an opportunity to get out of the busy city life and remember your spaces deep in our hearts. Thank you.

Artist Introduction

Jaeeun Jeon(B.1972) majored in fine arts both in bachelor’s degree and master’s degree at Sookmyung Women’s University. The process of her work starts from reading. Jaeeun Jeon repeating the spaces such as kitchen, stairs, and hallway of a house described in literature and writing/painting relate things to her childhood memories. These imageries are suggested in coloring and space through stereoscopic language by needle and thread. Jaeeun Jeon deals with fabric and ornaments on canvas as elements as a form of the module to explore pictorial stereoscopic beauty between the flat surface and three-dimensional boundaries by dividing, expanding, and recombining. Her sewing processes are the time of accumulating the memory which erases the experience and then recurving, reveals, and exposes, over and over. New given meaning in the space can be interpreted as ‘construction’ by the artist’s imaginations and reasons of her personal experience and memories. Through the exhibition <Lieux Prives(personal spaces)> with 2GIL29 GALLERY, Jaeeun Jeon’s spaces from her memory were well-received to transform into an individual ventilator, moreover, she participate in Cheongju Craft Biennale, also Kiaf SEOUL in 2021.
