2GIL29 GALLERY will present an invitational exhibition of HONG JUNG HEE from 22 Mar. to 20 Apr. 2019. In this exhibition, more masterful pieces of Nano series will be exhibited, which is a quintessential of the 50 years’ career of her who has played a pivotal role since an establishment of contemporary art in Korea following the solo exhibition in 2014 at MOA 5 years ago. She graduated Seoul National University with her B.F.A and dedicated herself to a study while staying in University of Michigan in the States as an exchange professor for 2 years. She was awarded The Minister of Culture and Information Award of the 20th National Art Exhibition, The Special Prize of the 3rd Korean Grand Prix Art in 1976, The Prize of the 1st Joon-Ang Grand Prix Art in 1978, and The 7th SEOKJU Art Award in1996. Also, her art works are collected in The Art Museum of the University of Michigan, The City Hall of Lincoln, The Library of Lincoln, British Museum, The National Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul Museum of Art, Ho-Am Art Museum, Sonjae Museum of Contemporary Art, and other leading galleries and museums at home and abroad.

In particular, she has been called ‘color alchemist’, and she has genuinely dedicated herself to a study on a color until her age of 70 since when she was enchanted by an aesthetic beauty of Korea through multi-colored Dancheong and Hanbok from her childhood. And her long-standing and sincere devotion to creating a color is well known, which includes an experiment of mixing a ground fish bone with a paints to earn a deep sentiment skimming off a characteristic grease of an oil painting or mixing a powdered coffee and sawdust with a paints up until she finds a suitable color. In result, the color that she has created is saturated but deep, and luxuriant but mature. She has never stopped evolving practicing an incessant experiment and study and has been in full bloom in 2005 with Nano series since ‘Ego-Korean’ series in the mid 1970’s, ‘Off self', in 1980’s, 'Passion' in 1990’s. Nano series reflects an idea of unity of man and universe and it is distinguished from her previous works in terms of its more simplified and genuine configuration. Simplified image, and intensely saturated color convey an infinitive world of unlimitedly expanding and inner world of human being deepening a depth of her art world. Symbolized flower, house, and mountain are repetitive in a rhythmical configuration with an application of unique pigments characterizing her matchless style, which is a mixture of sawdust and paints, generating a distinctive thick matière to reflect an accumulated time of eternity in the universe. Especially her recent works that will feature in this exhibition contain an energy of creation and amplification other than a rhythmic color which freely crosses a contraction and an expansion showing her mastery as renowned as “color alchemist”. An object is reduced and turned from a figurative representation into a symbolized image, and a repetitive composition of the reductive image expands the canvas into an another dimension of space presenting a consistent self-identical vitality. Nano- coagulated substance gains a new life, and in that sense a positive formation and creation open a new domain amplifying a canvas into an infinite space. Her art world is nothing but the world of producing new thing with a freshness and ability to create, which Deleuze emphasized. “ To generate a vital heat on one’s own, and to be minimized and self-transformed.” That is the new power of creation which the artist HONG JUNG HEE brings up in the contemporary art scene of Korea.

이길이구 갤러리는 2019년 3월 22일-4월 20일까지 홍정희 초대전을 선보인다. 한국현대미술의 시작부터 융성기까지 한국화단의 중추적 역할을 하며 꾸준히 작품활동을 해온 홍정희의 작가생활 50년이 고스란히 녹아있는 Nano 시리즈의 정수를 볼 수 있는 전시로2014년 서울대 미술관 MOA 이후 5년만의 개인전이다. 홍정희 화백은 서울대 회화과를 졸업하고 미국 미시간대에서 2년간 교환교수로 지내면서 연구에 전념하였다. 국전에서 문화공보부 장관상 및 76년 한국일보사에서 주최하는 한국미술대상전과 78년 중앙일보사에서 주최하는 중앙미술대상전에서 수상하였으며 96년 석주미술상을 수상한 바 있다. 또한 The Art Museum of the University of Michigan, The City Hall of Lincoln, The Library of Lincoln, British Museum, 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관, 호암미술관, 선재미술관 등 국내외 유수 미술관에도 홍정희 작가의 작품이 소장되어 있다. 홍정희 화백은 색을 자유자재로 다루는 ‘색의 연금술사'로 불려왔는데 어린시절 한복과 단청의 색이 주는 한국적 미의식에 감화되어 색채의 세계로 빠져들어 종심 從心 의 나이에 접어드는 동안 일심으로 색채 연구에 천착해왔으며 원하는 색을 얻기 위해 물감에 톱밥과 커피가루를 섞거나 유화 특유의 기름기를 걷어내고 푸근한 맛을 살리기 위해 생선뼈를 갈아 넣는 등 색채 표현에 대한 끊임없는 연구는 미술계에서 유명하다. 그 지난한 과정 속에 탄생한 색은 강렬하면서도 깊고 다채롭고 원숙하다. 1970년대 중반 '자아-한국인' 연작으로 시작하여 1980년대 '탈아(脫我)', 1990년대 '열정' 등 고착되지 않고 지속적으로 연구하며 발전하는 모습을 보여주며 2005년 '나노' 시리즈로 만개했다. ‘나노’ 시리즈는 우주의 합일 사상을 담은 작품으로 기존에 홍정희 작가가 선보였던 색면추상의 세계에서 좀 더 간결하고 순수해진 형식미가 두드러진다. 이미지를 간결화 시키고 강렬하게 응축된 색은 깊이감을 더하며 무한하게 확장되는 우주와 인간의 내면 세계를 표현한다. 기호화된 꽃, 집, 산 등의 반복되는 이미지를 리듬감있게 배치하며 체로 쳐낸 톱밥을 물감을 섞어 두터운 질감을 내는 독특한 마티에르를 형성하는데 이는 우주에 축적된 시간을 표현하기 위한 홍정희 만의 기법이다.
특히 이번 전시에 소개된 최근 작품들은 색채의 연금술사라는 평가대로 응축과 팽창을 자유롭게 넘나드는 색의 리듬감 뿐 아니라 생성과 증폭의 에너지가 담겨있다. 대상은 단순히 형태적 근원을 가진 재현적 형상에서 기호화된 이미지로 환원되고 또한 그 이미지의 반복적 배치는 캔버스를 다른 차원의 공간으로 확장시키고 끊임없이 자가 생성되는 생명력을 보여준다. 나노화된 응집체가 새로운 생명력을 얻어 무한한 차원의 공간으로 증폭되는 긍정적 생성과 창조의 장이 열린 것이다. 들뢰즈가 역설했던 새로운 것이 생산되는 세계 즉 새로움과 창조성의 능력을 가진 세계에 다름 아니다. '스스로 움직여 생명의 열을 만들어내는 것, 최소화 후 스스로 변하는 것' 이것이 바로 홍정희 작가가 한국현대미술에 던지는 새로운 창조의 힘이다.
