Since its inception in 2003, Kiaf SEOUL has brought about transformative changes to the art landscape of South Korea and elevated Seoul to be a focal point in the global art market. In this context, our gallery is passionately invested in collaborating with Kiaf SEOUL to transform Seoul and the Gangnam area into an international art hub. Sukyoung KANG B.1949
Sukyoung Kang, born in 1949, is a luminary in the realm of Korean craft art. An alumnus of Hongik University, Kang further refined his skills in pottery at the École Nationale Supérieure d’Arts et Métiers. Upon returning to Korea, he dedicated himself to nurturing the next generation of artists, serving as Dean of Ewha Women's University's College of Formative Arts and as Director of the Pottery Institute for three decades. Remarkably, Kang found his creative voice through the 'Slip Casting Technique,' a method often dismissed for its utilitarian focus in mass production. Rather than diminishing the artistic value, Kang subverted the technique to craft pieces brimming with aesthetic intuition. Eschewing elaborate detailing, he distills his work to its essential form, often opting for white—the purest of achromatic colors—as his medium. In Kang's creations, one can witness the 'culture of texture,' a nuanced expression of Korean aesthetics deeply embedded in the craft of pottery. His oeuvre, steeped in the philosophy of 'Korean white beauty,' has earned international accolades for its sublime formative qualities. Since 2003, his work has been a permanent fixture at the International Pottery Olympic Park in Athens, Greece. More recently, Kang was chosen to display his work on the external walls of the SeMoCA, Korea's inaugural museum dedicated exclusively to craft art. His artistic contributions have found a home in premier institutions both domestic and abroad. Notably, his works are part of the collections at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) in Korea, as well as globally renowned museums like the Royal Albert Museum and the Brooklyn Museum. In Sukyoung Kang, we encounter an artist who seamlessly marries tradition with innovation, serving as both a custodian of Korean heritage and a trailblazer in contemporary craft art.
Junyoung KANG B.1979
Born in Seoul in 1979, Junyoung Kang is a multifaceted artist who has carved out a unique niche in the contemporary art world. Educated in ceramics at both the undergraduate and graduate levels at Hongik University, Kang employs an expansive artistic language that spans ceramics, paintings, and videos to articulate personal narratives and emotions. Kang has showcased his work extensively within Korea, gracing esteemed venues like the ARKO Art Center and the Gyeonggi Museum of Art. His international presence is equally notable, with exhibitions spanning major global cities such as Taipei, Beijing, Singapore, Hong Kong, London, and New York. This has earned him a loyal following among art aficionados across Asia, further solidified by his participation in prestigious international fairs like Art Central HK.

Hana KWON B.1990
Born in 1990, Hana Kwon is a burgeoning talent in the contemporary art scene, captivating audiences with her emotionally resonant paintings. A graduate of the Art Center College of Design with a BFA in Illustration Design, Kwon crafts works that delve into the inarticulable spaces of human memory and emotion. Kwon’s oeuvre features a unique fusion of the culinary and the human, employing food not merely as subject matter but as an evocative narrative device. In her works, the tactile and sensory qualities of food intertwine with human expression, transporting the viewer beyond the bounds of temporal reality into realms of deeply felt memory. For Kwon, food serves as more than sustenance; it becomes a metaphorical lens through which past moments—shared, savored, and remembered—are brought vividly to life. MY Q B.1981
Born in Seoul in 1981, MY Q is no ordinary artist. Making his debut in the music industry in 1997, he has since been an auteur, deftly juggling roles that span from singer-songwriter to lyricist, composer, mixer, and creative director across diverse media platforms. With an imposing discography that includes over 300 performances, eight full-length albums, four EPs, and an astonishing 184 songs—of which 54 are singles—MY Q has connected deeply with a wide audience under his musical persona. Yet, music is but one avenue of his expansive artistic endeavor. In 2021, MY Q ventured into the realm of visual art with his solo exhibition "What are you doing the rest of your life?" at 2GIL29 GALLERY. This bold foray captivated critics and heralded MY Q as a compelling new voice in visual artistry. His impressive participation in prestigious fairs such as the 2021 and 2022 KIAF Seoul and Art Busan only solidified his reputation. What sets MY Q apart is his unique synesthetic approach: musical notes that once resided solely on manuscript paper have transitioned into symbolic visual motifs on canvas. His work is characterized by an exuberance of color and form, buoyed by rough yet liberated brushstrokes that reflect his multifaceted artistry. This duality has captured the imagination of a diverse audience, ranging from emerging MZ-generation collectors to traditional art aficionados, cementing his status as an emerging luminary in the art world. His 2023 exhibition, "Soft Slam," held at 2GIL29 GALLERY, further broadened his scope by tackling the monotony and challenges of pandemic-era daily life. Jungmin SON B.1980
Jungmin Son describes herself as someone who observes and captures the beauty of her surroundings through her works. She especially treasures the memories of her childhood, where she fully immersed herself in nature’s embrace until the age of six. This deep connection of her memories with nature has solidified her spirit that her works bear resemblance to the natural world. With a background in fashion design and experience as an accessory designer in New York, her illustrations possess a sophisticated allure, characterized by sensuous colors and refined drawings without any excess. Especially in her soft, pastel-rendered illustrations, somebody’s face with nonchalant facial expression that we sometimes encounter, or captured moments of our shiny days are to be found, which give familiarity to the viewers. The artist says that everything is natural, and the natural state is the most beautiful and captivating thing. Where Jungmin Son’s gaze falls, there are glimpses of the vitality of plants reaching out under the sunlight and the captured essence of individuals with unique personalities. Her illustration works contain countless diverse stories of people with their own expressions, all portrayed without exaggeration or awkwardness. In the upcoming 2023 Kiaf, we hope that viewers will have the opportunity to explore the beautiful moments of someone’s life or the freshness and vitality of nature through Jungmin Son’s works. Youngkyun LIM B.1955
Born in 1955 in Daegu, South Korea, Young Kyun Lim is a photographer who studied at the department of photography at Chung-Ang University and the International Center of Photography (I.C.P) in New York. He later graduated from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University (NYU). His works are held in prestigious art museums worldwide, such as Museum of Modern Art in New York, International Center of Photography, George Eastman Museum, Münster and Osnabrück Municipal Art Galleries in Germany, and National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea. Regarded as the first-generation photographer in the Korean art scene, Young Kyun Lim captures the essence beyond the phenomena and interprets the times through his photography.
In May 2019, his photography series made a significant impact at the exhibition <NAM JUNE PAIK, HERE NOW> held at Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art in Seoul. Currently, Young Kyun Lim immerses himself in a project that involves transparently observing the interior spaces of venerable libraries and visualizing the ephemeral energy and enigmatic aura that emanate from specific locations through encounters with the subjects. Recently, he has been working on capturing the essence of historical significance by photographing traditional Korean academies, particularly those preserved in Gyeongsangbuk-do. His works, which go beyond the visual form of the subjects, encapsulating intrinsic narratives that lie beneath, will be showcased at 2023 Kiaf.
Jaeeun JEON B.1972
Jaeeun Jeon, born in 1972, stands as a transformative figure in the contemporary art scene. A graduate of Sookmyung Women's University where she majored in painting, Jeon has transcended traditional artistic boundaries both domestically and globally. Eschewing conventional mediums, she employs needle and thread as her instruments of choice, offering an evocative reimagining of color, form, and space. Jeon's art is a meticulous orchestration of minute details. She embraces a modular approach, crafting minimal units that she then deforms and reconfigures. Her work is less an act of creation than one of revelation, an intricate process of exposing and obscuring the stratified memories and inner experiences that accumulate over time. Each stitch serves as a unit of time, an encapsulation of memory that lends the work its distinctive narrative texture. The highly anticipated exhibition "Les Lieux de Mémoire," staged at 2GIL29 GALLERY in November 2022, unveiled a new layer of Jeon's artistic vision. Here, objets d'art not only adorned the canvas but also became an integral part of it, heightening viewers’ intuitive engagement. Each brushstroke, though metaphorically replaced by her stitching, imbues the canvas with a colorful tapestry of emotions, giving off an almost poetic resonance. Over two decades, Jeon has constructed a uniquely formative world teeming with metaphorical presences. Her works exude an efflorescent quality, a blooming of themes and techniques that reflect the inner complexities of human experience. As the art world keenly anticipates her new series set to debut at the 2023 KIAF, one can't help but feel that we are on the verge of witnessing another evolutionary leap in her already illustrious career. In this light, Jeon is not just an artist; she is a cartographer of the soul, a chronicler of human experience, mapping out intricate emotional landscapes stitch by stitch. QWAYA B.1991
Qwaya, born in 1991, is not merely a name but an evocation—of quietude, quest, and the contemplative depth that graces the night. Emerging from Seoul's vibrant art scene, Qwaya defies traditional art education paradigms, having majored in fashion design at Sangmyung University rather than receiving any formal artistic training. Yet, it is precisely this unconventional background that imbues his works with an unvarnished intensity and unfettered spirit, making him one of the most riveting up-and-coming artists in Korea. His creative process unfolds much like the penning of a daily journal, chronicling the often-overlooked aspects of daily life. His breakthrough exhibition, "Ordinary People," hosted at 2GIL29 GALLERY in 2020, became a resonant social commentary on the quietude and isolation embedded in our quotidian existence. Featuring ambiguous faces that defy straightforward interpretation, Qwaya offers viewers an emotional playground that echoes Paul Klee’s dictum: "Art does not reproduce what is visible; it makes things visible."
Stepping into the complex structures of Gilles Deleuze's time, Qwaya's work tantalizingly unravels our conventional understanding of chronology. 강석영 B.1949
1949년 서울 출생으로, 홍익대학교 및 동 대학원에서 도예를 전공하고 파리 국립기술 공예학교에서 수학했다. 귀국 후, 30년간 이화여자대학교 조형예술대학 학장 및 도예 연구소 소장을 역임하며 연구와 후학 양성에 힘썼다. 그는 파리 유학 시절부터 꾸준히 발전시켜온 ‘슬립 캐스팅’ 기법을 통해 역설적으로 심미적 직관성을 극대화하는 제작 방법을 구현해냈다. 그는 ‘한국적 백색의 아름다움’을 변주하는 작업을 선보여온 한국 도예계의 거장이다. 조형 원리에 근거해 완벽히 구현된 형태를 ‘인위적으로 변형’하는 제작 방식으로 독자적인 추상 도자의 세계를 구축했다는 평을 듣는다. 특히 도예에서 주요하게 다뤄져야 할 ‘질감의 문화’, 즉 질감에서 발현되는 문화성을, 한국적 미의식을 통해 충만하게 담아낸다. 그의 작품은 이미 그 조형성을 국제적으로 인정받아, 2003년부터 그리스 아테네 ‘국제 도예 올림픽 공원’에서 세계적인 작가들의 작품과 함께 영구 소장 전시되고 있다. 그리고 국립현대미술관(MMCA) 등 국내 유수의 기관과 영국 로얄 알버트 뮤지엄, 미국 브루클린 뮤지엄 등 해외 주요 미술관에 소장되어있다. 특히 서울 공예박물관 외관 파사드 세라믹이 영구 설치되어 많은 사람들에게 큰 감흥을 안겨주고 있다. 2022년 5월 이길이구 갤러리에서 열린 <강석영 초대전>에서 조선백자가 가진 한국 고유의 미감과 멋을 모던한 감각의 설치 작품으로 구현하며 한국적인 현대 도예의 방향성을 제시하며 그의 존재감을 공고히 했다. 이번 2023 Kiaf를 통해 50년의 오랜 실험과 탐색이 녹아든 강석영 예술세계의 정수가 담긴 작품을 선보일 예정이다.
강준영 B.1979
일상을 흐르는 개인적인 감정들과 이야기들을 도자. 페인팅. 영상 등 다양한 조형 언어로 담아내는 강준영은 서울 출생으로 홍익대학교와 동 대학원에서 도예를 전공했다. 2006년 경기 세계 도자 비엔날레 클레이 올림픽 대상을 시작으로, 아르코 미술관, 경기도 미술관 등 국내 유수의 전시 공간에서 수십 차례의 전시를 선보였고, 대만, 중국, 싱가포르, 홍콩 등 아시아 주요 지역뿐 아니라 영국, 미국 등의 전 세계 주요 도시에서 전시를 해왔다. 현재 그의 작품은 한국 마사회, 국회의사당, 한향림 현대도자미술관 등지에 소장되어있다. 그는 자전적인 경험과 내러티브를 사회적 맥락에서 재해석하여, 사적 사유를 공적 영역으로 옮겨오는 넓은 스펙트럼을 가진 작가로서, 도자와 페인팅의 경계를 넘나드는 도자 페인팅 오브제 작업으로 유명하다. 그는 한 인터뷰에서 “동시대를 경험하며 마주하는 모든 것이 작업의 원천”이라 밝힌 것처럼, 그의 시선은 개인적 특수성에 머무르지 않고, 사회의 이면성과 소외된 것에 닿아 있다. 특히 직접적인 메시지를 담은 “Pray for You”, “I Love You More Than My Life” 등의 작업은 인류애적 사랑과 희망의 목소리를 전하고 있다. 2022년 이길이구 갤러리 초대전 <”O”와 “X” 그리고 우리>에서 ‘가족’과 ‘집’이라는 주제로 다층적인 감정을 그만의 조형 언어로 풀어내며 깊어진 작업 세계를 펼쳐 호평받았다. 이번 Kiaf SEOUL 2023 을 통해 펼칠 그의 신작 작품을 통해 풍부해진 색감과 마티에르의 향연을 느껴볼 수 있길 바란다.
권하나 B.1990
권하나는 미국 디자인 스쿨 아트 센터 컬리지(Art Center College of Design BFA Illustration Design)에서 일러스트레이션을 전공하고 순수 미술 영역에서 솔직한 내면의 감정과 추억을 표현한 회화를 활발하게 선보이고 있다. 지나간 시간을 포착하여 저장된 기억의 파편들과 말로 표현하기 힘든 자신의 생각과 감정을 시각화한다. 권하나의 작품에는 음식과 사람이 결합된 인물이 등장하는데 인물의 표정과 음식에서 느낄 수 있는 미각적 요소는 인간의 감각이 기억하는 감정을 매개로 물리적인 시간 너머의 특별한 순간으로 이동시킨다. 이때 작가에게 음식은 그녀만의 특별한 서사로 존재하고 있다. 단순히 음식을 먹고 그린 것이 아니라 기억하는 순간을 공유한 것으로서 작품에 재현된 음식은 과거를 비춰보는 도구이기도 한 것이다. 권하나의 창작 행위는 작가 내면의 안정과 질서를 찾는 여정이며 그의 작품은 동시에 공감이 필요한 많은 이들을 치유하기도 한다. 이런 따뜻하고 사랑스러운 그의 작품은 작년 화랑미술제, 아트부산, KIAF 등 국내를 대표하는 아트페어에서 큰 반향을 일으켰고 권하나 작가는 단숨에 라이징 스타로 부상했다. MZ세대뿐 아니라 동심을 마주하며 추억을 회상하는 기존 미술 애호가들에게도 사랑받으며 전 세대에 걸친 두터운 지지를 받고 있다. 그의 인기를 증명하듯 쇼메 등 글로벌 브랜드 및 럭셔리 패션 매거진의 러브콜 또한 받고 있다. 그의 신작 작품을 기다리시는 많은 분들의 관심 속에 이번 Kiaf SEOUL 2023에서도 이길이구 갤러리와 함께 권하나 작가의 아이덴티티가 더 깊게 묻어나는 매력적인 작품들을 선보일 예정이다.
마이큐 B.1981
서울 출생. My Q 마이큐는 1997년 음악계에 입문하여 단순히 싱어송라이터에 머무르지 않고 작사, 작곡, 편곡, 믹싱 작업 등 음악뿐 아니라 크리에이티브 디렉터 등 미디어 전반의 창작 작업을 두루 섭렵하는 재능 있는 아티스트로서 300회 이상의 공연, 8장의 정규, EP 앨범 4개, 싱글 음원 54개, 총 184곡을 통해 MY Q라는 뮤지션으로서 대중들과 소통해왔다. 음악에 자신의 예술세계를 담아왔던 그는 지난 2021년 3월 이길이구 갤러리 기획전시<What are you doing the rest of your life?>를 계기로 본격적으로 미술이라는 새로운 창작의 세계로 접어들어 단기간에 평단을 매료시켰으며, 2021 Kiaf 서울, 아트부산, 2022 Kiaf 서울에 연이어 참여해 큰 호평을 받았다. 수십 년간 오선지에 쌓아 올렸던 음표는 자연스럽게 흘러나와 이제 그의 캔버스 작업을 기호화된 시각적 선율로 채운다. 특히 거친 듯 자유로운 붓질과 감각적인 색상은 화면을 강렬한 생명력으로 가득 채우고, 이는 MZ 세대를 기반한 수많은 신진 컬렉터들 뿐 아니라 기존 미술 애호가들도 매혹시켰고 미술계의 주목받는 신예 작가로 부상했다. 2023년 이길이구 갤러리에서 개최했던 <Soft Slam> 전시에서 그는 N데믹 시대에 접어든 요즘, 반복되는 매일을 성실히 살아가는 평범한 우리들의 이야기에 주목했다. 매일 새로운 마음으로 나를 찾아가는 여정에 놓인 것에 감사함을 전하며, 주어진 시간을 충만히 채워가는 오늘의 우리에게, 그는 찬사와 응원을 주는 작품으로 많은 이에게 따뜻한 위로를 줬다. 임영균 B.1955
사진작가 임영균은 대구 출생으로 중앙대학교 사진학과 및 뉴욕대학교 예술대학원을 졸업, 뉴욕 국제 사진센터(I.C.P)에서 수학했다. 문화공보부장관상을 시작으로 스미소니언 박물관이 선정한 전 미주 10 대 사진가상을 수상한 바 있으며 영국 대영박물관에서 <백남준의 기억>이란 주제로 초대전을 가졌다. 최근에는 뉴욕 주 코닥박물관으로 불리우는 조지이스트만 사진 박물관에서 '20 세기 사진의 역사전'에 한국인 최초로 초대되는 영광을 얻었다. 그의 작업은 이전 세대가 지닐 법한 감각적이고 즉각적인 감흥보다는 고즈넉하고 정돈된 단아함과 우아함이 깃들어 있다. 임영균의 시선은 빠르게 변하는 현대사회의 속도감을 비껴가 일상을 주목하며, 각 대상이 가진 힘을 면밀히 관찰하고, 깊은 통찰력을 담아 포착해내는데 이는 실로 존재와 마주하며 본질을 탐색하는 과정이다. 2019년 5월 이길이구 갤러리에서 열린 <백남준 지금, 여기 NAM JUNE PAIK, NOW HERE> 전시에서는 비디오 아트 거장 백남준의 예술정신이 그대로 드러난 사진 작품으로 큰 반향을 일으켰다. 현재 임영균 작가는 유서 깊은 도서관의 내부 공간을 있는 그대로 투명하게 관조하며 특정 공간에서 발산되는 모종의 영적인 에너지, 그 대상과 자신의 만남을 통해 찰나적으로 포착되는 묘한 기운을 시각화하는 심안 心眼의 작업에 몰두하고 있다. 최근에는 대한민국의 서원들을 찾아서 그중에서도 역사의 자리로 남아있는 경상북도 서원들을 촬영하는 작업을 하고 있다. 대상의 시각적 형태를 넘어 그 이면에 깃든 본질적인 이야기를 담고 있는 그의 작품세계를 2023 Kiaf에서 만나 보길 바란다.
전재은 B.1972
