2GIL29 GALLERY presents MY Q’s solo exhibition <Soft Slam> from May 13th to June 10th. MY Q (b. 1981, Real Name: Hyonseok Yoo), who has gained attention with his bold color and composition in his paintings, will showcase over 50 large-scale new works in this exhibition, which he has developed over a long period of contemplation including a series of works that explore condensation and expansion. MY Q has built up a complex interplay between the inner and outer worlds of human beings on his canvas based on his experiences as a musician, artist and himself with diverse cultural surroundings with his own unique sensitivity. Rather than communication with others, he empties out his personal desires and converts his inner voice and emotions, such as repeated love and loss that he has encountered in life into symbolic images and metaphorical yet bold brushstrokes. <Soft Slam>, as it is the title of this exhibition, represents the story of an artist who sits on a slanted boundary and faces repeated failures on a daily basis. His intuitive senses are harmoniously revealed on the canvas, presenting works that do not impose a unilateral conclusion, but rather provide minimal clues for the viewers to interpret and reinterpret in their own ways. MY Q repeatedly questions what dominates his life, but every day he empties himself back into the blank state and shows us his daily routine, which is sometimes relentless and sometimes calm. He captures the stories of us living in this era on the canvas with his own intuition and experiences. It is more accurately expressed that the artist uses the properties of paints to convey the complex questions and emotions he experiences in his daily life, and moves the paints freely with his unique senses and colors. His brushstrokes and sophisticated expressions of his emotional records, which are rough yet smooth, spontaneous yet balanced, reflect his instincts, enabling the viewers to expe-rience his everyday life. These works are the result of his persistence in working every day without putting down the brush, even while pursuing his music career and creating simultaneously over the past few years. MY Q’s journey, which he has traveled on an arduous path, speaks for itself, as we believe that he will continue to solidify his unique formative world as the painter MY Q.
As interest in art increases among a lot of people in their daily lives even in the midst of the rapidly flowing post-pandemic era, we invite you to MY Q’s new series <Soft Slam>, which will be a valua-ble moment of tension and relaxation, allowing us to briefly escape our busy lives and peek into the depths of our hearts.

MY Q (B. 1981 Real Name, Hyunseok Yoo ) Artist Introduction

Born in Seoul in 1981, artist MY Q (real name, Hyunseok Yoo) entered the music industry first in the art field, which was a field of interest when he spent his childhood in Hong Kong. He was first known to the public as a musician and a talented artist who enjoys creative work across the media, including creative directing as well as music such as writing lyrics, composing, and mixing music. Due to intense disagreement by the family, he eventually entered the research-oriented public university of Keele University Law School in Keele, North Staffordshire, England, but did not complete his studies. Having captured his art world in music, he took to the art stage in earnest in 2021 with his first painting exhibition <What are you doing the rest of your life?>, and fascinated the Korean art stage in a short period of time. Starting that year, he has expanded his presence as a painter by participating in Korea's representative art fair and group exhibitions, including KIAF Seoul, Art Busan, Galleries Art Fair, TV Chosun Exhibition, and Art Chosun. The solo exhibition <Eternal Days>, which was held at the main branch of the historic Shinsegae Department Store in 2022, was an exhibition that had a great influence on establishing himself as a new artist in the art world in a short time. MY Q’s wild but free brushstrokes and sensuous colors fill the screen with intense vitality. His painting works represent the encounter of a sensitive gap between the inner and outer worlds of humans based on his various cultural experiences and times growing into a musician and an artist. It is expressed and shown by converting into images that have been dismantled and symbolized in the self-reflection inherent in the artist himself. His works fill the screen with metaphorical and bold gestures. Let's remember MY Q in our hearts, who is looking forward to a bright future.

Prior to the MY Q Exhibition

The word ‘immersion’ comes to mind. Painting is closely bound up with this word, and artists spend a lot of time to cre-ate this state. Viewing MY Q’s paintings, I thought that they were forged effortlessly. If they are painted, not rendered, it is because of his attitude towards the accumulation of time. His paintings are armed with soft senses. Darkness or thickness is in a painting, but we have to stop for a while as the source of this immersion draws near heavily and the senses are acti-vated.

We are at times preoccupied with some thought of the pres-ent, keep returning to somewhere in the past, and are im-mersed in a place to the extent that we cannot even recognize it. We sometimes wander with this idea or are encroached on by it to move our mood up or down. We also are relieved by this or undergo a difficulty. We want to say that all are the same but the artist is different. The artist has to bring them up once again. I would like to give them to the artist involved in the work of revealing the term ‘sublimation,’ which is difficult to use easily because of its positive and connotative meaning. I hope he will remember that someday when his life and work are in trouble.

His actions can be read while viewing his paintings. There was some uniqueness because he learned what painting is through the action of painting. He indulged in and enjoyed painting par-tially or entirely in brushstrokes and colors. I wondered what kind of impulses and changes he learned through his paint-ings because his fast breath was sensed in several paintings. He seemed to be free in his paintings. He had a heavy heart to think that he did the most difficult task easily. I read that he reached here after going through several stages and followed the movements inside without the help of the visible physical world of objects. His world seemed to be firmly established with the consistent and intrinsic senses and the artist himself looked stable and good. As what this means is closing from another place or a closure, we do not know his life in a com-fortable place. We came to realize that he was immersed in an-other world after healing his wounds and disciplining himself through such wounds based on the accumulation of time. As its resultant senses are delivered as soft colors, his ideal world as a protective film or shield is solidly constructed. This ideal world was Mother Nature like a child, mother, or father. Seeing such a world armed and built up by such senses will make me remember a small island or small society.

There are many images in the scope of recognition. He looks at images from tiny objects before his eyes to someone’s face in his heart. He has faced white paper understands that such visible shapes are quite natural but it is not easy to draw out a shape without asking why. I laugh because he can do this with-out hesitation. His image who is sincere in his innocent artifici-ality is in his paintings.

We tend to continue our thinking in the relative comparison without knowing what light and dark, right or wrong, good or bad, and something or nothing are. I would like to encour-age MY Q to keep doing this reckless practice because I felt, when viewing his works, that he tried to replay some source in search of something and intended to do what others cannot do well. When one makes a debut as an artist, he or she asks for some understanding, but he could reduce his accounts in the history of the artist himself and other people who have viewed his works together in five or ten years. If no accounts are in-volved, it approximates belief. With faith, you can draw out the history intrinsic to you and it becomes the truth and can be heard by everyone.

이길이구 갤러리는 마이큐의 개인전 <Soft Slam>을 5월 13일부터 6월 10일까지 개최한다. 대담한 색채와 자유분방한 화면 구성으로 이루어진 페인팅으로 주목받아 온 작가 마이큐(b. 1981 본명: 유현석)는 이번 전시에서는 응축과 확장의 연속 작업으로 작가가 계속해서 고민하며 진전시켜온 산물들이다. 다양한 문화권과 음악인 그리고 미술인으로 성장한 여러 경험을 바탕으로 인간의 내면과 외부 세계 간의 예민한 간극의 조우를 회화 작업 속에 자신만의 미감으로 캔버스에 구현한다. 대형 신작 위주의 작품으로 50여 점의 페인팅 작업이 소개된다. 마이큐는 개인의 욕심을 비워내고 타인과의 관계보다는 나 자신 스스로 안에 내재되어 있는 자아 성찰 속에서 매일매일 사랑과 위기, 상실감 등 작가가 겪는 내면의 소리, 감정들에 귀를 기울이며 그것들이 바로 마이큐의 붓질을 통해 해체되고 상징화한 도상들로 전환되어 보여진다. 은유적이면서도 대담한 몸짓으로 화면을 가득 메우고 있다. 이번 개인전의 <Soft Slam>은 전시의 대표작들을 이루는 주요 출품작의 제목들이다. 그의 직관적인 감각들이 화면 안에 조율되어 드러나면서도 일방적인 어떠한 결말도 강요하지 않는다. 그 스스로 삶을 지배하는 그 무엇에 관한 질문을 반복적으로 되묻지만, 매일매일 다시 흰 여백으로 비워내고 하루를 치열하게 살아가는 우리 모두의 일상을 보여준다. 매우 거침없이 때로는 소리 없이 흘러가는 잔잔한 강물과 같다. 이 시대의 삶을 살아내고 있는 바로 작가와 우리들의 이야기인 것이다. 작가는 일상과 삶에서 느끼는 복잡다단한 질문들을 물감이란 물성을 통해서 그 특유의 감각과 색채로 물감을 자유자재로 움직인다는 표현이 더 정확하다. 감정이나 기록들을 무의식의 흐름에 따라 거친 듯 부드럽게, 자유로운 듯 하지만 균형감 있는 붓질과 강렬하듯 세련된 표현들은 본능에 맡겨 느껴지는 대로 그려내는 그의 일상을 느끼게 한다. 그것은 지난 몇년간 음악활동과 미술 작업을 병행하면서도 매일매일 하루도 붓을 놓지 않고 작업을 이어온 결과들이다. 쉽지 않은 길을 묵묵히 걸어온 그의 길이 말해주듯 앞으로도 더욱 화가 마이큐만의 조형세계를 확실히 구축해 나가리라 믿고 있다.

펜데믹 이후 빠르게 흘러가는 일상 속에서도 예술에 대한 많은 분들의 관심이 높아지고 있는 현재, 삶 속에서 자신만의 추상적인 시각언어로 작업하는 마이큐 작가의 새로운 작업 ‘Soft Slam’을 통해 바쁜 삶에서 잠시 벗어나 우리의 마음깊은 곳을 들여다보며 긴장과 쉼을 반복하는 값진시간이 되길 바란다.

마이큐 (1981년생, 본명 유현석) 작가소개

작가소개 작가 마이큐 (본명 유현석) 는 1981년 서울 출생 으로 어린시절 홍콩에서 보내면서 관심 분야 였던 예술 쪽에 그것도 음악계에 먼저 입문하였다. 작사, 작곡, 편곡, 믹싱 작업 등 음악 뿐 아니라 크리에이티브 디렉터 등 미디어 전반의 창작 작업을 두루 섭렵하는 재능 있는 아티스트로서 대중들에게 먼저 음악가로 이름을 알렸다. 집안의 극심한 반대에 결국 영국 노스스태퍼드셔주 킬에 위치한 연구중심 공립 종합대학교 킬대학교 법학대학에 입학하지만 학업을 마치지 못했다. 음악에 자신의 예술세계를 담아왔던 그는 지난 2021년 이길이구 갤러리 기획으로 첫 회화전시 <What are you doing the rest of your life?>를 계기로 본격적으로 미술무대에 올라 새로운 창작의 세계로 접어들어 단기간에 한국 화단을 매료시켰다. 그해를 필두로 KIAF 서울, 아트부산, 화랑미술제, TV조선 기획의 전시, 아트조선에서의 기획전 등 연이어 한국의 대표 아트페어 및 그룹전에 참여하며 더욱 화가로서 입지를 다지면서 그 보폭을 넓혀왔다. 2022년 유서 깊은 신세계백화점 본관 본점에서 개최되었던 전시 <영원한 날들> 개인전은 그야말로 짧은 시간에 미술계의 주목받는 신예 작가로 자리매김하는 데 큰 영향을 준 전시였다. 마이큐의 거친 듯 자유로운 붓질과 감각적인 색상은 화면을 강렬한 생명력으로 가득 채운다. 다양한 문화권과 음악인 그리고 미술인으로 성장한 여러 경험을 바탕으로 인간의 내면과 외부 세계 간의 예민한 간극의 조우를 회화 작업으로 나타낸다. 그것은 작가 스스로 안에 내재되어 있는 자아 성찰 속에서 해체되고 상징화한 도상들로 전환되어 보여진다. 그의 작품들은 은유적이면서도 대담한 몸짓으로 화면을 가득 메우고 있다. 앞으로의 미래가 더욱 기대되는 작가 마이큐를 기대해 본다.

마이큐 전시에 앞서서

몰입이라는 단어가 떠올랐다. 그림을 그린다는 것은 이 단어와 밀접한 일이고 작가들은 이 상태를 만들기 위해 많은 시간을 배회한다. 마이큐의 그림을 보며 그것이 수월하게 구축되어 있다는 생각이 들었다. 그리되 만들지 않고 그려진다면 그것은 시간을 모아 쌓아 둔 태도 때문이다. 소프트한 감각으로 무장된 그림들, 그 짙음은 한 그림 안에서도 있었지만 그 감각들이 여러 개로 이동하며 이어지자 그 몰입의 근원이 무엇일지 무겁게 다가와 잠시 멈춰야 했다.

우리는 작금의 어떤 생각으로 골몰하기도 하고 자기도 모르게 지난날의 어딘가로 자꾸만 회귀해 인지하지도 못할 만큼 그곳에 젖어 있기도 하며 그런 사유로 방황하기도 하고 기분을 올리거나 내리도록 잠식 당하기도 하며 이를 해소하기도 하고 어려움을 겪기도 한다. 모두가 그렇다는 이야기를 우선하고 싶었지만 작가는 다르다는 이야기도 하고 싶었다. 작가는 그것들을 다시 한번 들추어야 한다. 승화라는 긍정적이고 그 내포한 의미가 크기에 쉬이 사용하기는 어려운 단어를 이 들추어 내야 하는 일을 하고 있는 작가에게 주고 싶었다. 언젠가 삶과 작업이 어려울 때 기억했으면 한다.

그림을 보니 그의 행위들이 읽혔다. 그림이 무엇인지 그리기 행위 속에서 자신도 모르게 터득한 까닭에 고유함이 있었다. 붓 터치와 색에서 부분적으로 혹은 전체로 그리기를 탐닉하며 즐기고 있었는데 여러 점의 그림에서 빠른 호흡이 읽혀서 앞으로 어떤 충동과 변화를 자신의 그림 안에서 체득할지 그다음이 궁금해졌다. 그림에서 그는 자유로워진 것 같았다. 자유롭게 그린다는 가장 어려운 일을 쉽게 하게 된 것 같아 마음이 무거웠다. 작가는 그의 내부에서 몇 단계의 과정들을 거쳐 여기까지 왔고 눈에 보이는 물리적인 대상 세계의 도움 없이 그 내부의 움직임들을 따르고 있는 것이 읽혔다. 그 감각들이 일관되고 고유해서 자기 세계가 단단히 구축되었음이 작가로는 안정되어 좋아 보였고 그것이 의미하는 것은 또 다른 곳들로부터의 닫힘이고 폐쇄이기에 자신이 구축한 안온한 곳에서의 삶은 우리가 알 수 없지만 그렇게 되기까지의 과정들이 홀로 담아두고 쌓아둔 시간을 기반으로 하므로 상처가 회귀되고 그로부터 단련하며 그를 다른 세계로의 몰입으로 옮겨 두었음을 알게 했다. 게다가 그 결과로의 감각들은 소프트한 색들로 전해지니 방어와 보호막으로의 그의 이상 세계는 단단히 구축된다. 그 이상(Ideal)들은 장난, 아이, 아이로의, 엄마, 엄마로의, 아빠, 아빠로의 같은 Mother Nature였고 그런 감각들로 무장해 구축한 세계를 보는 것은 나에게 작은 섬, 작은 사회 하나를 기억하게 할 것 같다.

인지 범위에 많은 상(象)들이 있다. 눈앞의 작은 물건부터 마음속의 누군가의 얼굴까지 어딘가에 놓여진 상들을 보고 지낸다. 그렇게 보이는 모양들은 너무 당연한 것 같지만 직접 어떤 상들을 꺼내려 하면 단순한 모양 하나도 왜라는 이유 없이는 도출하는 것이 쉽지 않다는 것을 하얀 백지를 여러 번 마주한 사람은 이해한다. 그것을 마구 하고 있길래 웃음이 났다. 천진난만한 그 작위 속에 진지할 작가의 모습이 그림 속에 있었다.

밝다 어둡다, 맞다 아니다, 좋다 좋지 않다, 있다 없다와 같이 우리는 밝음이 무엇인지 어둠이 무엇인지 알지 못한 채 그 상대적 비교 속에서 생각을 한다. 마이큐는 그런 상대적인 생각이 아닌 그 무엇을 찾아 근원에 답하고 있음이, 사람들이 잘 하지 못하는 일을 하고 있음이 그림을 보는 내내 다가와 앞으로도 이 무모한 일을 계속해 주면 좋겠다 하는 응원을 주고 싶었다. 작가로 첫발을 내디딜 때는 사람들의 이해를 바라게 되지만 그 시기가 지나면 5년 10년 그 이후 같이 보아온 사람과 나의 역사 속에서 설명을 줄여갈 수 있게 된다. 그렇게 설명이 없어지면 그것은 믿음에 가까워진다. 믿음이 있게 되면 그제야 비로소 나의 내부에 담아두었던 고유한 역사들을 꺼낼 수 있게 되고 그것은 진실이 되어 모두에게 들릴 수 있다.
