이슬아, 네모 안의 너와 나
이길이구 갤러리는 2023년 11월 4일 부터 11월 30일까지 <네모 안의 너와 나>란 주제로 화가 이슬아(b.1990)의 전시를 개최한다. 이번 전시는 창문을 통해 바라본 도시와 사람들을 세심히 기록한 도상들 중심으로 신작 30 여점으로 구성되어 있다. 이슬아 작가는 빌딩 속 창문을 넘어 살아가는 인물들과 도시의 풍경을 소재로 일상의 순간을 포착하여 그녀만의 화풍으로 그려낸다. 빌딩 사이에서 요가하는 사람, 테니스를 치는 사람 등 네모 반듯한 빌딩 숲 속에서 각양각색의 방식으로 살아가는 사람들을 담아낸다. 작품에서 나타나는 창의 네모난 형태는 단지 창의 프레임만을 나타내지 않는다. 작가는 그 틀을 통해 도시의 삶에 존재하는 규칙과 이해관계 등 비가시적인 면도 나타낸다. 작가는 이 일상에서 관찰되는 가시적인 부분과 비가시적인 부분을 끊임없이 작품으로 풀어내어 단순한 그림의 영역을 넘어서 특별한 경험의 공간을 보여준다. 창의 안과 밖에서 비춰지는 일상을 수시로 사진을 찍어 순간을 포착하고 그 순간에 따른 이미지나 심상들을 경험하게 한다. 대상에 대한 개인적인 관찰과 내밀한 사유는 당시의 현장성을 불러일으키고, 그때의 감정을 되돌려주는 재현 장치로서 활용된다. 캔버스 속 오브제와 배경들은 작가가 공유하고픈 그의 일상적 경험들을 나열한 시리즈이며, 그 순간의 찰나가 기록된 회화적 사진들이다. 말로써 형용할 수 없는, 해질녘 노을을 마주한 ‘작가의 순간’이 그림을 통해 전해지는 것이다. 이슬아 작가는 우리가 살아가는 세계와 그 안의 다양한 요소들을 지극히 사적으로 가시화 시켜왔다. 그리고 그녀의 예술은 단순히 시대의 유행에 편승하는 것이 아니라 세상에 대한 지속적인 관찰과 기록을 통해 그녀만의 독창적인 작품 세계를 구축해왔다. 이번 전시에서 이 작가는 도시속의 삶에 있어서 그가 가지고자 하는 태도를 그만의 시각과 언어로 나타내고자 한다. 그녀가 세상을 바라보며 경험했던 기록들을 통해 그녀는 삶에 대한 또 다른 방향성을 보여줄 것이다.

작가소개
이슬아(B.1990) 작가는 부산 출생으로 부산 예술고등학교를 졸업하고 미술대학에서 서양화를 공부했다. 그 동안 작가는 국내 활동 보다는 뉴욕, 런던, 파리 등 유럽에서 왕성히 활동을 이어오면서 최근까지 파리 전시를 하고 현대미술 작가로서의 위치를 공고히 확립해왔다. 그녀가 다뤄온 작업 매체의 확장성은 어떠한 구분이나 장르에 대한 의구심을 걷은 채, 뚜렷한 방향으로 작가만의 새 화면을 찾은 것이다. 도시의 일상으로 흐르는 매일 똑같은 현대인들의 멈취진 시간이 그녀의 작업 소재가 된다. 햇볕에 따라 바뀌는 콘크리트 색, 비오는 날의 짙은 나무 색, 노을이 질 때의 하늘 색 같은 것들을 섬세하게 표현한다. 작가는 여행지나 일상에서 수시로 사진을 찍어 순간을 포착하고 그 순간에 따른 이미지나 심상들을 그림들로 표현한다. 그녀의 대상에 대한 개인적인 관찰과 내밀한 사유는 당시의 현장성을 불러일으키고, 그때의 감정을 되돌려주는 재현 장치로서 활용된다. 캔버스 작품 속 오브제와 배경들은 작가가 공유하고픈 그의 일상적 경험들을 나열한 시리즈이며, 시간이 기록된 회화적 사진들이다. 앞으로는해외 뿐만 아니라 국내 활동도 더욱 활발히 하며 여성 특유의 내재된 섬세함으로 무장한 회화성으로 화단의 주목을 받고자 한다.
Artis Introduction
Seula Yi (B.1990) is an artist born in Busan. After graduating from Busan Arts High School, she pursued her passion for painting at an art college. Over the years, while she has been involved domestically, it's her vibrant activities in global art hubs like New York, London, and Paris that have truly marked her journey. Most recently, she fortified her position as a contemporary artist with an exhibition in Paris. Yi's versatility in her choice of mediums reflects a clear direction, as she successfully breaks free from any conventional genre boundaries to carve out a unique canvas for herself. Yi draws inspiration from the stagnation of everyday urban life, capturing the monotony that underscores the routines of modern individuals. She has a keen eye for the subtlest of details, from the changing hues of concrete with the sun's dance to the rich tones of trees on rainy days and the mesmerizing colors of the sky at sunset. As part of her process, she frequently photographs scenes from her travels and daily life, encapsulating fleeting moments and then translating those captured images and emotions onto her paintings. Her meticulous observations and introspective musings serve as a mechanism to evoke the ambiance and emotions of those moments, making her canvas pieces resonate like visual diaries chronicling temporal experiences. Looking forward, while Yi aims to remain actively engaged in the international art scene, she also has plans to amplify her presence domestically. She aspires to gain recognition in the art community for her paintings, which are imbued with a sensitivity inherent to her feminine perspective.
