Still, Between: A Gaze That Lingers
2GIL29 GALLERY presents Still, Between: A Gaze That Lingers, a group exhibition featuring five artists—Woong Kim, Daewoong Nam, Heungsup Jung, Charlie Han, and Dohyun Kim—from October 14 to November 6, 2026. The exhibition invites visitors to shift their perspective amid the accelerating pace of urban life and to reflect on their inner selves and the world around them through art. Autumn, with its gradual transformation, offers an opportunity to look back on the passage of time and reconsider familiar surroundings from a different perspective. Drawing on this seasonal sensibility, Still, Between: A Gaze That Lingers explores the value of contemplation and introspection, qualities that can become increasingly elusive in contemporary society. In cities where images and information constantly intersect, we often lose opportunities to observe our surroundings attentively or reconnect with our own senses. The exhibition turns toward emotions and inner movements that are easily overlooked, exploring how artistic encounters can open up new ways of perceiving the world around us. “Still, Between” does not simply refer to a state of silence or stillness. Rather, it describes the subtle spaces between everyday moments, between oneself and others, and between visible reality and inner consciousness. These intervals become spaces for reflection, allowing us to move beyond habitual ways of seeing, reconsider the world around us, and encounter emotions and memories that may have remained unrecognized. Through the works of five artists employing distinct visual languages and media, the exhibition explores these shifts in perception from multiple perspectives.
Woong Kim (b. 1944) discovers the formal possibilities inherent in his surroundings and in objects, reinterpreting Korean aesthetic sensibilities through the interplay of color and form in a contemporary visual language. In his work, objects transcend their role as subjects of representation and emerge as distinct formal entities governed by their own chromatic and structural order. Through this approach, he delicately reveals the aesthetic value and sensory nuances embedded within his subjects. Daewoong Nam (b. 1974) investigates the complex relationships between images, memory, and historical consciousness through painting. He focuses on how past events and images are transformed through memory and sometimes reconstructed as mythic or fictional narratives, questioning how what we accept as truth comes into being. His work reveals memory not as a passive record that preserves the past, but as an ongoing process continually reshaped by present perspectives and interpretations. Heungsup Jung (b. 1975) transforms consumer goods and visual elements of popular culture into artistic objects, examining the symbolic meanings and values assigned to objects within consumer society. Objects conventionally understood through their functions and uses acquire new meanings and relationships within an artistic context. This transformation invites viewers to reconsider established ways of seeing, the desires shaped by consumption, and the broader social structures through which value is constructed.
Media artist Charlie Han (b. 1973) explores the relationship between image-making and the perception of reality through photography and time-based media. The selection, editing, and reconfiguration of media images do more than communicate reality; they also construct particular perspectives and interpretations. His work reveals both the possibilities and limitations of images as records, questioning how the information and visual experiences we encounter shape our understanding of truth. Dohyun Kim (b. 1995) translates inner emotions and psychological states into abstract visual language through repetitive gestures, the layering of lines and planes, and the accumulation of dimensional textures. The rhythms and layers that emerge through repetition and accumulation create formal spaces in which tension and release, balance and change coexist. His practice explores the possibility of inner stability and renewal, translating intangible psychological experiences into a tangible visual language. Together, the five artists explore distinct territories, including objects and images, memory and history, consumer culture, and inner emotional experience. Their practices converge in their questioning of what lies beyond the visible and in their capacity to open up new possibilities for understanding the world. Rather than leading to a single interpretation, their diverse media and visual languages generate multiple layers of meaning shaped by each viewer’s experiences and perceptions.
Still, Between: A Gaze That Lingers emerges from the intersection of these artistic perspectives. The subtitle, A Gaze That Lingers, emphasizes the act of looking beyond an immediate impression and allowing meaning to unfold through sustained attention. Just as the changing seasons lend different atmospheres to the same landscape, artworks reveal new meanings through the memories, emotions, and experiences each viewer brings to them. Situated at the intersection of the city’s dynamic rhythms and the gallery’s relative quiet, the exhibition transforms viewing into an opportunity to reconsider one’s relationship with oneself and the surrounding world. Rather than prescribing fixed meanings or a particular mode of interpretation, Still, Between: A Gaze That Lingers offers an open space in which visitors can discover their own questions and develop their reflections through the distinct artistic languages of the five participating artists. 2GIL29 GALLERY hopes that the quiet exchange between artworks and viewers will open up new perspectives on art and nurture possibilities for reflection, allowing each visitor to discover their own way of seeing and understanding the world.

Woong Kim 김 웅, Untitled, 2024, Oil on Canvas, 185 x 225cm
Woong Kim (B.1944) went to New York in 1969 and studied B.F.A at School of Visual Art (SVA), M.F.A at Yale School of Art and worked as a professor in SVA (1979-1987). He had been an exclusive artist for 18 years (1988-2006) at the Howard Scott Gallery in New York City and has been also recognized by the New York art scene for his active transaction in Christie and Sotheby Auction. His painting appears to have a characteristic of abstract painting, but if you take a closer look at his work, a formative aspect exists in it. This is because his source of works originates from his memories. He unfolds an assemblage of a layered stratum of moments drawn from his memories on the canvas including his mother’s patchworks for making his cloth, Korea’s traditional windows, doors, and tablecloth adorned with a piece of mugwort or petals. They come to life through his artistic gaze and are turned into a treasure.
He considers things in his childhood not just as an object but a creative archetype and infuses Korean aesthetic sense of beauty into a form of colors and formation. A memory towards where he left has ripened into ‘an imagery in the memory’ going beyond just a trigger of remembrance, and it has become a totemic origin where he can return in his mind. In particular, his works are separate from a common way of making work often found in contemporary art, which leans on a spontaneous inspiration, and rather he accumulates a layer one by one by repetitive brushstrokes of layers as if he piles up a piece of his memories brought from the past. And they have become concrete forms and alive as a transcending spirituality over time. They let viewers go back to his memories and get into his precious time, which has survived over time and built his identity, as an aesthetic journey to the history of the artist.

New York Institute of Technology에서 MA를 취득했다.
Dewoong Nam (b.1974) was born in Daegu, South Korea. He received his BFA from Parsons School of Design and his MA from the New York Institute of Technology in the United States.Through painting, Nam explores the relationship between images, memory, and historical consciousness. In his work, the past remains as images in memory, and the process through which these images become mythologized is presented as a form of fiction. He also draws attention to the potential for manipulation and distortion inherent in photographic and moving images, examining both the similarities and differences between photography, video, and painting in the ways they construct images. The juxtaposition of naturalistically rendered landscapes with unreal or unexpected imagery creates a sense of unfamiliarity within seemingly familiar realities.
His major exhibitions include Ultra Matrix at the Chengdu Contemporary Image Museum, Chengdu, China (2026); System takes command, The new abnormal at ABI Space, Hangzhou, China (2025); Jeonnam International Sumuk Biennale at Mokpo Culture & Arts Center, Mokpo (2023); Media, People, Figures at Daegu Art Factory, Daegu (2018); Intentional Tension at Wumin Art Center, Cheongju (2014); I Send You to Me at Daegu Art Factory, Daegu (2013); Wonderful Pictures at Ilmin Museum of Art, Seoul (2009); and IAS Media Screening 2008 at Insa Art Space, Seoul (2008). Nam has participated in residency programs at SeMA Nanji Residency, Seoul (2012–2013); Incheon Art Platform, Incheon (2009–2010); Daegu Art Factory, Daegu (2018); and Space SSAL, Sacheon (2025). He also participated in the ARKO Museum of Art Media Distribution Program (2009–2011) and the Insa Art Space Media Distribution Program (2008–2009).

Charlie Hahn (b. 1973) is a Korean-American media artist whose practice explores the complex relationship between identity and culture through photography and time-based media. As a 1.5-generation Korean-American artist, Hahn examines the multifaceted nature of identity shaped by diverse cultural backgrounds and personal experiences, investigating the ways in which identity is formed and redefined through opposition, consensus, synthesis, paradox, and transformation. Drawing on interdisciplinary perspectives from philosophy, psychology, and sociology, his work visualizes the interactions between individuals, society, and their cultural environments. In his photographic practice, Hahn captures the subtle emotional and psychological dimensions of human experience through light, composition, and visual structure. His time-based works, including video installations and digital art, further explore the passage of time, transformation, and the relationship between past and present. Through these artistic approaches, he challenges the notion of identity as fixed and instead presents the self as continuously evolving in response to personal experiences and social contexts, inviting viewers to reconsider their own cultural identities and perceptions.
Hahn received his BFA in Photography and MA in Digital Arts from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), and his MFA in Studio Arts from Towson University in the United States. His works have been presented in numerous exhibitions and screenings both internationally and in Korea. Selected exhibitions include Line+beep2 (2018), Vice Versa (2019), Digits (2021), and Like you know it all (2024) at 2GIL29 GALLERY; Distinct Uncertainty (2015) and Super Romantics (2014) at Daegu Art Factory; Overdrive: Incheon (2013) and Memophilia (2010) at Incheon Art Platform; 48th Juried Exhibition (2013) at the Masur Museum of Art; and Zero to 3900 (2007) at the Johns Hopkins University Mattin Center. In 2005, he worked as a researcher at the Media Art Research Institute of Yonsei University, and since 2015, he has served as a professor at Keimyung University, combining his artistic practice with teaching. Through collaborative projects and interdisciplinary approaches, Hahn continues to explore new possibilities for artistic expression while fostering a deeper understanding of cultural diversity.

Dohyun Kim (b. 1995) is an artist whose practice explores the human inner world and traces of emotion through the materiality of diverse media and repetitive artistic processes, moving between painting and three-dimensional forms. Working with materials such as paper, acrylic paint, and charcoal, Kim creates distinctive textures and sculptural surfaces, particularly by utilizing the structural qualities of corrugated cardboard. His work reflects on the emotions experienced through human relationships and the memories accumulated within the mind, translating them into overlapping lines, planes, and layers of color. Through these processes, he explores themes of psychological stability, rest, and emotional recovery. In his representative INTROSPECTION series, Kim visualizes inner emotions through the repetition and accumulation of materials, developing an abstract visual language in which two-dimensional and three-dimensional elements coexist. Since 2021, he has held solo exhibitions at various art spaces in Korea and participated in group exhibitions both domestically and internationally, including an exhibition in Los Angeles in 2022.
