Artist Introduction

홍 유 영 Euyoung Hong (B.1975)

Euyoung Hong (b. 1975) explores the complex layers of contemporary society and the process of capitalist urbanization through her interpretations of the materials and structures of urban spaces. She expresses influences and changes in a three-dimensional and installation-based form, focusing on the political and social relationships of objects and spaces in this process. Particularly, she captures the transformation of objects and the flow of time in the capitalist transformation process, encapsulating the fleeting moments and spaces in her perspective. Her work elongates the gaps filled with various times accumulated in objects and spaces that are disappearing. The perspectives she presents are composed of a wide range of visual arts. Hong has been actively involved in numerous exhibitions, residencies, and programs both in London and Seoul. She graduated from the Sculpture Department of Ewha Womans University, received a Master's degree in Sculpture from the University of Iowa, USA, and obtained a Ph.D. in Art from Goldsmiths, University of London, UK. In October 2016, she published "The Spatial Politics of the Sculptural: Art, Capitalism and the Urban Space" through Rowman & Littlefield International in London. Euyoung Hong was selected as the Artist of the Year by the Korean Cultural Center in Washington in 2018 and was included in "100 Sculptors of Tomorrow" by Thames & Hudson in London, UK, that same year. She has participated in group and solo exhibitions at renowned art institutions both domestically and internationally, including the MAC International Art Prize at the Metropolitan Arts Center in Ireland, InCube Gallery in New York, and the Seoul Museum of Art. Her works are also part of collections at Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro in Milan, the University of Iowa Thesis Repository, the International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP) in New York, the David Roberts Collection, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in London, and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul, Korea.

홍유영은 도시공간의 물질과 구조에 대한 해석을 통해 현대 사회와 자본주의 도시화 과정의 복잡한 층위를 드러낸다. 영향과 변화를 입체적이고 설치적인 형태로 표현하며, 이 과정에서 사물과 공간의 정치적, 사회적 관계에 주목합니다. 특히, 자본주의적 변환 과정에서 나타나는 사물의 변화와 시간의 흐름을 포착하고, 이를 통해 사라져가는 순간들과 공간들을 그의 시선안에 담는다. 그것은 사라져가는 다양한 시간이 축적된 사물들과 공간들의 틈새를 길게 늘여 본 작업들이다. 그가 바라보는 시선들은 실로 다양한 시각예술로 구성된다. 홍유영은 런던과 서울을 오가며 국내외 다수의 전시, 레지던시, 프로그램을 거쳐 활발한 활동을 이어왔다.  이화여자대학교 조소학부를 졸업하였으며, 미국 아이오와 대학교 조소과 석사학위를 받은 후, 영국 런던 골드스미스 대학에서 미술학 박사학위를 받았다. 2016년 10월 런던 출판사 ’로우맨 & 리틀필드 인터내셔널’을 통해 ’피어-리뷰’ 영문 미술전문 서적인 〈The Spatial Politics of the Sculptural: Art, Capitalism and the Urban Space〉를 출간한 바 있다. 홍유영 작가는 2018년 워싱턴 한국문화원의 올해의 작가, 2018년 영국 런던의 테임즈 앤 허드슨(Thames & Hudson) '100 스컬프터 오브 투모로우(100 Sculptors of Tomorrow)'에 선정됐다, 아일랜드 메트로폴리탄 아트센터에서 개최된 '맥 인터내셔널 아트 프라이즈(MAC International Art Prize)', 뉴욕 인큐브 갤러리(InCube Gallery), 서울시립미술관 등 국내외 유명 미술관에서 그룹전 및 기획전에 참여한 바 있다. 폰다지오네 아르날도 포모도로 (밀라노) 아이오와 대학교 논문 보관소(아이오와) 국제 스튜디오 및 큐레이터 프로그램(ISCP, 뉴욕) 데이비드 로버츠 컬렉션, 런던 국립현대미술관(런던), 국립현대미술관(서울, 한국) 등에 작품이 소장되어 있다.
